NYU Steinhardt Presents "Pool Boy" at Provincetown Playhouse, March 22-25

The NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development’s Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions will present a workshop production of the new show Pool Boy at the Provincetown Playhouse March 22 – 25. Directed by Steinhardt professor of musical theater, John Simpkins, the show features music and lyrics by Niko Tsakalakos, with book and lyrics by Janet Allard.

Through a writer’s residency grant from the National Alliance for Musical Theatre, this production is part of The Steinhardt School’s Program in Vocal Performance’s commitment to the development of new musicals.

“Working on new musicals is a very specific skill for young actors that can be taught and developed while we are in production for Pool Boy,” said Simpkins. “The kinds of questions that talented actors ask of emerging characters in new musicals can be invaluable to the development of any new show. It is our hope that at NYU Steinhardt each spring, we can both help our students understand this unique acting task and aid in the development of new musicals.”

A young singer-songwriter from New Jersey lands a job as a pool boy at the Hotel Bel-Air. Trying to parlay his interaction with celebrities into his own dreams of fame and fortune, he encounters people who see him only as a servant – a lightweight – a pool boy. As he learns “the game” and the lifestyle around him, he falls for the one other “real” thing poolside - a girl named April. Nick must ultimately choose between ambition and love. He struggles with how this fake, material world might even give him what he never knew he needed, something to write about.
