NYU's Brademas Center Sponsors Discussion on the Political Documentary ‘Patriocracy’ -- March 2

On Friday, March 2, the Brademas Center for the Study of Congress at New York University will hold an afternoon seminar on the subject of citizen empowerment addressed by the political documentary “Patriocracy” – followed by a screening of the film at a nearby movie theater in what will be its New York City premiere.

The event is entitled “United Citizens: How We Revive Our Democracy.” The seminar responds to the widespread frustration and perception of Washington’s dysfunction, and the desire by many people to know what can be done to change the landscape of American politics.

Discussion begins at 12:30 p.m. at NYU Global Center, 58 Washington Square South (Auditorium C-95), with panels on “Money and Politics,” “The Political Power of Social Media,” and “Reforming Congress From the Inside Out.”

Guest speakers include: Anne-Marie Slaughter, Princeton University professor of politics and international affairs, and, from 2009-2011, U.S. State Department policy planning director (keynote address);  former U.S. Representative Mickey Edwards, vice president, Aspen Institute; Buddy Roemer, current presidential candidate and former Louisiana governor; Charles Kolb, president, The Committee for Economic Development; Public Campaign president Nick Nyhart; Ruck.us founder and CEO Nathan Daschle; John Rauh, founder and chairman, Americans for Campaign Reform; Adam Skaggs, senior counsel, NYU Brennan Center's Democracy Program; Susan Lerner, executive director, Common Cause New York; Michael Bassik, managing director and US Digital Practice Chair at Burson-Marsteller; Andrew Rasiej, founder, Personal Democracy Forum; Elliot Ackerman, COO, Americans Elect; and filmmakers Brian and Cindy Malone, "Patriocracy."

Common Cause, No Labels, the League of Women Voters, and Americans for Campaign Reform will each deliver presentations. These organizations are co-hosting the event with the Brademas Center.

Following the seminar discussions, which will conclude at 5:30 p.m., “Patriocracy” will be screened at 6:25 p.m. at the nearby Quad Cinema, 34 W. 13th Street (between 5th and 6th Aves.), kicking off the film’s weeklong special engagement in New York City. The Quad Cinema will offer a $3 discount on tickets to those who bring the seminar program with them to the box office.

Admission to the discussion portion of the event is free. Registration is required at http://www.nyu.edu/brademas/programs.events/.
