The Tisch School of the Arts’ Next Reel Film International Festival, which for nearly 20 years has showcased the finest filmmaking from emerging talents from around the world, will once again be held in Singapore, and will feature 64 films from 34 film schools in 19 countries.

Next Reel Film Festival to Feature the Best Films from the World’s Top Student Filmmakers

   Over 60 Films by Young Filmmakers from 19 Countries to Compete

                                      At 2012 Film Festival in Singapore

The Tisch School of the Arts’ Next Reel Film International Festival, which for nearly 20 years has showcased the finest filmmaking from emerging talents from around the world, will once again be held in Singapore, and will feature 64 films from 34 film schools in 19 countries.   The young filmmakers compete for US $20,000 in prize money.

The festival will be held at the Tisch Asia campus in Singapore from 05 – 10 Feb 2012. The Next Reel International Film Festival was founded in 1993 by NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, and many of the films screened at Next Reel go on to be showcased at the world’s foremost festivals, including Cannes, Toronto, Venice, and Berlin.

“The Festival celebrates the risk taking and innovative spirit of Independent filmmaking” said Mary Schmidt Campbell, Dean of the Tisch School of the Arts.  “The screenings and panels provide a showcase for the next generation of young filmmakers and the opportunity for them to connect with their peers from all over the world.”

Mark Dickerman, Interim Associate Dean for Tisch Asia, said, “Next Reel also celebrates the originality, energy, and collaborative spirit of young student filmmakers.  In one of the largest festivals of its kind, audiences will find some of the best films of student filmmakers from all over the world.” 

Festival screenings are open to the public and will be held at level 5, the Cathay Cineplex (2 Handy Road, Singapore 229233) from February 5 – 9, 2012 at 6:00 p.m., 7:30 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. daily. Admission to the daily screenings is free and tickets will be available from February 5, 2012 at Level 5, The Cathay Cineplex from 3:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.  For more information about films and other special events, visit www.nextreel.org.

The Awards Ceremony and screening of the winning films will be held on February 10, 2012 at The Cathay Cineplex at 6:00 p.m.

In addition to public screenings, the showcase for student films includes cash awards and workshops conducted by industry professionals.  Countries represented in Next Reel 2012 are: Argentina, Australia, Canada, Finland, Germany, Ghana, Israel, Italy, Mexico, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States of America.

Founded in 1993, the Next Reel International Film Festival is a biennial event organized by a team of faculty and staff from the Tisch School of the Arts. The “Next Reel International Film Festival” is the international counterpart to the Kanbar Institute of Film & Television’s “First Run Festival.”
