NYU’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute will host “BLOWING MINDS: The East Village Other, the Rise of Underground Comix, and the Alternative Press, 1965-1972,” an exhibition highlighting the East Village’s underground newspaper, which published in the 1960s and early 1970s. The exhibition has been curated by the Local East Village, a New York Times community web site run in collaboration with the Carter Journalism Institute. The exhibition, which includes original copies of the East Village Other (pictured above), enlarged covers of the newspaper’s seminal issues, and artifacts from its 2nd Avenue office, runs from Feb. 29 through March 16 at the Carter Journalism Institute. The exhibition launch will be heralded with a panel discussion featuring East Village Other (EVO) editors and reporters on Tues., Feb. 28, 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Carter Journalism Institute.

The exhibition has been curated by the Local East Village, a New York Times community web site run in collaboration with the Carter Journalism Institute.

The exhibition, which includes original copies of the East Village Other, enlarged covers of the newspaper’s seminal issues, and artifacts from its 2nd Avenue office, runs from Feb. 29 through March 16 at the Carter Journalism Institute, 20 Cooper Square, 6th Floor (between 5th and 6th Streets). Panelists will include: The New York Times’ Claudia Dreifus, New York Times columnist Steven Heller, and Alex Gross, all EVO writers, along with EVO Editor Peter Leggieri and Dan Rattiner, an EVO co-founder and founding publisher of the Hamptons’ Dan’s Papers, and poet Ed Sanders, whom Life magazine dubbed “a leader of New York’s Other Culture” in 1967. The discussion will be moderated by John McMillian, a professor at Georgia State University and author of Smoking Typewriters: The Sixties Underground Press and the Rise of Alternative Media in America.

Along with the Local East Village, the exhibition sponsors are NYU’s Fales Library and Special Collections, and NYU’s Program in Museum Studies, with support from the New York Council for the Humanities, the NYU Humanities Initiative, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, and Alan Abramson.

In January, NYU’s Fales Library and Special Collections received Peter Leggieri’s collection of both EVO and Gothic Blimp Works, an underground comics tabloid published by EVO in 1969.
