"Reborn: 9/11" Art Exhibition Set for September 13 Unveiling

New York University’s Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, in partnership with the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, is pleased to announce the opening of REBORN : 9/11.

The first exhibition of the 2011-2012 academic year at the Gallery Space at Wagner, REBORN is curated by NYU Steinhardt’s Ann Chwatsky. The dynamic group exhibit features mixed-media works by six emerging New York City artists: Chwatsky, Joseph Imhauser, Alyse Liebovich, Hue Park, Chelsea Pfohl, and Alexandria Tarver. An opening reception is scheduled Tuesday, September 13, from 5:00 pm to 6:30pm at the Gallery Space (Puck Building, 2nd Floor, 295 Lafayette Street at the corner of Houston Street). The event is open to the public via RSVP at www.wagner.nyu.edu/events.

“Human consciousness is finite. Each of us lives for only a passing moment. Perhaps this ephemerality, obvious in the wake of 9/11, compels us to search for the meaning of our existence,” commented Chwatsky. “The artists in REBORN are a community, a diverse and interesting group of faculty and graduate and undergraduate artists from the Department of Art and Art Professions of the Steinhardt School. The Wagner Graduate School of Public Service and the Steinhardt School have gotten to know each other through the vehicle of art. Cutting across traditional lines is what often brings people together. For this exhibit, each artist has been asked to exhibit work that is his or her memory/reaction. It has been my pleasure to work as the curator with the Wagner Art Committee on this exhibit.”

Chwatsky added, “The University is considered an institution of memory and of new knowledge. The history of art is here which gives us all a perspective on art and hopefully inspires us. The artist is like a vessel who interprets their own art and what the culture is all about. Art has always been the keeper of the history of people, beginning with the cave drawings and continuing today. Ten years ago we were present at the destruction of the Twin Towers. This will never be forgotten but also did serve to bring New Yorkers together in a bond that has continued to strengthen. Each artist has been asked to exhibit their impressions of ten years since that event. “

Ann Chwatsky is known as a photographer and an educator at New York University at the Department of Art and Art Professions of the Steinhardt School; Joseph Imhauser is currently an MFA student at NYU Steinhardt; Alyse Liebovich is a graduate of NYU Gallatin; Hue Park is studying Studio Art at New York University; Chelsea Pfohl is a recent NYU graduate who hails from the San Francisco Bay area; Alexandria Tarver is a Bachelors of Fine Arts graduate from NYU Steinhardt.
