Exhibition to Focus on Paper as a Material and Feature Works by Fourteen Artists

NYU Steinhardt’s 80WSE Galleries has announced its fall exhibition will be a group show guest curated by Valerie Hammond and Kiki Smith focusing on paper as a material.    Entitled Papertails and featuring works by 14 artists, the exhibition includes examples that range from printmaking and collage to photography, painting, and sculpture.  It will open Sept. 14 for a special viewing from 6 to 8 p.m. and remain on view during regular gallery hours through Nov. 5, 2011.

Hammond and Smith, recognized as inspired and innovative artists, co-teach an advanced printmaking course in the Steinhardt School’s Art and Art Professions Department.  They share an enthusiasm for the limitless possibilities of paper, and as the curators of Papertails they selected a group of artists from their community whose work with paper each “admires and finds inspiring.”  In their curators’ statement, Hammond and Smith write: “Each artist’s use of paper is a vital and integral part of his or her practice, and each finds a unique approach to working with the material.”

The artists represented in the exhibition are: Michael Byron, Francesco Clemente, Julia Fish, Carl Fudge, Chie Fueki, Beka Goedde, Kathleen Graves, Valerie Hammond, Hilary Harnischfeger, Antony Hegarty, Stephen Mueller, Rachel Ostrow, Kiki Smith, and Zachary Wollard.  Papertails is accompanied by a catalogue of works in the exhibition and features an essay by art historian Maggie Wright.

80WSE Galleries is located at 80 Washington Square East (between W. 4th Street and Washington Place).  Subway: N&R (8th St. Broadway).  Gallery hours:  Tues. to Sat. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.  The exhibition is free and open to the public. For further information, call: 212-998-5747.
