Have you ever wondered about the 4 large evergreen trees you walk by when you go into Bobst Library? They are Eastern Hemlock, a conifer that is native to Manhattan island and it's the state tree of Pennsylvania. They are considered the best evergreen trees for shady sites (the entrance to Bobst only gets a couple hours of direct sun each day). These trees were planted at Bobst in October of 2009, and so far there's been no sign of Hemlock Wooly Adelgid, the insect pest that prevented the planting of Hemlocks for quite some time but seems to have run its course in our area. One of the main reasons this native species was selected for this prominent spot is that all three pests that love to attach Eastern Hemlock--adelgids, mites, and scale--are treatable organically with the application of horticultural oil. Eastern Hemlock makes a great tall hedge plant in a wind-protected site as it can be sheared back each year to form a dense screen. It's also useful as a specimen or even as a foundation plant, but make sure to give it enough room to spread out.
