New York University’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute will host a “Hyperlocal Newsroom Summer Conclave,” July 8 and July 9, bringing together the operators of a number of successful sites to think through some of the major issues they face. The event, to be held at 20 Cooper Square, between 5th and 6th Streets (7th Floor), will feature editors and executives from The New York Times, The Boston Globe, and NPR, among others.

Registration fee is $25. Register here. For more information, contact Kate Panuska at 212.998.8044 or panuska@nyu.edu. For a complete schedule of sessions, click here. (Subways: 6, Astor Place; N, R, 8th Street)

The conclave will consider three core issues facing hyperlocal sites:

·         Community: creating it, growing it, sustaining it, and making it relevant;

·         Money: making enough to survive, grow, and innovate;

·         Tools: how to reach diehard users, the underserved, and grasp the full community  portrait

Featured participants include: David Dahl, The Boston Globe; Debra Galant, Baristanet.com; Mary Ann Giordano, The New York Times; Jeff Jarvis, Buzzmachine.com; Rich Jones, The Local East Village; Bob Kempf, NPR; Brooke Kroeger, Carter Journalism Institute; Michele McLellan, Knight Foundation; Howard Owens, The Batavian; Jay Rosen, Pressthink.org; Melissa Bailey, NewHavenIndependent.com; Frances Dinkelspiel, Berkeleyside.com; Jim Schacter, The New York Times; Carll Tucker, Main Street Connect; and Dave Winer, ScriptingNews.org.

In September of 2010, The New York Times and the Carter Journalism Institute launched The Local East Village, a hyperlocal site that is part of The Times’s network of community web sites. The site, which covers New York City’s East Village, is the first devoted exclusively to reporting on a Manhattan neighborhood. The Local East Village (LEV) site is built by NYU faculty and students, working with Times journalists and software developers. Carter Journalism Institute Professor Rich Jones, an award-winning veteran local and national reporter for The New York Times and The Philadelphia Inquirer, is the site’s editor.

The event has sponsorship from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
