Wild Indigo (Baptisia Australisin Mercer Plaza, 251 Mercer Street.

Flowering right now in the plaza above NYU's CoGeneration Plant is the plant named the 2010 Perennial of the Year by the Perennial Plant Association--it's commonly known as Wild Indigo (Baptisia australis). Wild Indigo is a shrubby native with great appeal in the spring and beyond. After it flowers, Wild Indigo's inflated seed pods lends late season interest.  Its long taproot provides drought tolerance, and it can last for decades in the same spot without the need for dividing.  Adaptable to a variety of soil conditions, Wild Indigo  just needs good drainage and plenty of sunlight to thrive.
