New York State’s Spanish Spelling Bee Finals to be Held June 3

One hundred students from across New York City and State, including recent immigrants, children of immigrants, and students learning Spanish as a foreign language, will demonstrate their mastery of the Spanish language by competing in the state-wide 2011 New York State Spanish Spelling Bee on Friday, June 3, 9 a.m. at United Federation of Teachers Headquarters, 52 Broadway (just south of Exchange Place), Shanker Hall, 2nd floor.

The participating 4th through 8th grade students have reached the Spanish Spelling Bee Finals after competing at their schools and in their school districts.

“We are very proud to support these bright, young Spanish speakers and learners as they demonstrate their academic skills,” says Nellie Mulkay, director of the New York State Spanish Bilingual Education Technical Assistance Center (BETAC) at New York University’s Metropolitan Center for Urban Education. “Research shows that all students make academic gains when learning a second language. In addition, strengthening skills in the students’ native language improves academic achievement in English.”

This competition is sponsored by New York State Education Department’s Office of Bilingual Education and Foreign Language Services and hosted by the United Federation of Teachers. McDonald’s Corporation is a supporter of the 2011 New York State Spanish Spelling Bee, providing prizes for the first- and second-place winners as well as financial support for the event.

Reporters interesting in attending the 2011 Spanish Spelling Bee must RSVP to Ché Melson at 212.998.5296. For more information, click here.
