NYU Selects Architects for 433 First Ave

In an important step to fulfill NYU’s core academic mission through its city-wide strategic vision for expansion, New York University (NYU) today announced that it has chosen EYP Architecture & Engineering and Kohn, Pedersen, Fox Associates (KPF) to design a new, 170,000 square-foot facility  along the University’s existing First Avenue Health Corridor on Manhattan’s East Side.  The school will be the new home for NYU’s College of Nursing, which is currently located in Washington Square, will provide expanded facilities for the College of Dentistry, and will create space for a new multi-school bioengineering program.

Expansion in the health corridor is called for in NYU 2031: NYU in NYC, a city-wide strategy for growth set in motion more than three years ago that envisions growth around NYU’s core campus as well as three areas outside Greenwich Village, including Manhattan’s Eastside health corridor, in Downtown Brooklyn, and on Governors Island.

“The academic consolidation of NYU’s College of Dentistry and College of Nursing  six years ago has been a major success.  This step – their physical consolidation – is both the natural outgrowth of that academic decision and in line with the goals of the 2031 plan, by maximizing the use of our existing footprint and freeing up space in our core” said Lynne Brown, Senior Vice President for University Relations and Public Affairs at New York University. “The enhanced health corridor will help centralize and improve NYU’s health-related programs, research efforts, and science initiatives.”

NYU 2031 outlines plans for an expanded academic campus that enhances medical and health sciences education in the corridor on First Avenue between 24th and 34th streets. The area is already home to a cluster of health-related University programs, including the College of Dentistry, and the NYU Langone Medical Center, which encompasses the NYU Hospitals Center and the NYU School of Medicine.  Proximity to and affiliations with non-NYU facilities, such as Bellevue, provide a compelling programmatic  and academic rationale for this area as well.

The new facility will be erected on an NYU-owned site at 433 First Avenue. Once abated and properly prepared, the existing structures will be completely demolished in order to construct the new facilities.

In addition to the physical changes at the corridor, NYU is working to develop compatible University programs within the health corridor, enhancing prospects for cross-discipline research, shared facility collaboration, and interdependencies between academic and professional programs, while providing improved health-related services to the community.

NYU has selected EYP and KPF, two firms with prior experience partnering with the University, to work as a team in delivering the Health Corridor project.  EYP, an award-winning Architecture and Engineering firm with expertise in areas of higher education, energy, government, and science and technology, has been selected as the architect of record. Having worked on a wide range of projects, including the renovation of the General Assembly and Conference Buildings of the United Nations as well as NYU’s Molecular Design Institute Labs, EYP will utilize their special expertise in laboratory and academic planning in the design of the Health Corridor.

KPF, one of the world’s pre-eminent architecture firms providing architecture, interior, programming and master planning services for clients in both the public and private sectors, has been selected as the design architect of the Health Corridor project and will be responsible for guiding the design of the building.  The firm has a renowned reputation for design excellence and a diverse portfolio which includes New York City’s Museum of Modern Art and NYU’s Furman Hall.

In other NYU 2031 news, it was announced today that NYU’s engineering affiliate, the Polytechnic Institute of NYU (NYU-Poly), will expand into neighboring space in Downtown Brooklyn’s MetroTech Center.  NYU-Poly is entering into a 20-year lease for a total of 120,000 rentable square feet of space at 2 MetroTech and 15 MetroTech to house two academic departments as well as Provost Operations, academic spaces and administrative functions.
