An exhibition entitled Bolinas, by Rachel Barrett, the 2010 Tierney Fellowship award recipient from the Department of Photography & Imaging in the Kanbar Institute of Film and Television at New York University, will go on view June 2 at the Tisch School of the Arts.

“Bolinas is an earnest look at a small, unincorporated and largely off-the-grid community in Northern California, resting precariously on the coast of the Pacific,” said Barrett.  “There are no longer any true communes in town but that same sharing mentality of perpetual exchange and engagement persists.”  According to Barrett, the works delve into the fictions these young men and women created for themselves and by so doing examine the notion of identity and the ways in which individuals shape their understanding of self within the context and coherence of others and the land.

The exhibition opens June 2 and will remain on view through July 30, 2011 in the Gulf+Western Gallery at 721 Broadway (at Waverly Place).  Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays.  It is open to the public, and admission is free.  A photo I.D. is required when entering the building.  For further information, call 212.998.1930, or visit www.photo.tisch.nyu.edu.

The annual Tierney Fellowship grant was established by the Tierney Family Foundation in 2005.  It is awarded to a Photography & Imaging alumnus who has shown excellence in the field of photography and has graduated within the past seven years.  The primary goal of the Fellowship is to find aspiring artists who will be tomorrow’s leaders and to assist them in overcoming challenges that photographers face at the start of their careers.

Rachel Barrett is currently an adjunct professor of photography at Kingsborough Community College and The College of Staten Island. A 2011 PDNs 30, Barrett has received numerous other awards and honors for her personal work. She has shown nationally in both solo and group shows, including exhibitions at The Camera Club of New York, Barbara Krakow Gallery, Sara Tecchia Gallery, The Minneapolis Center for Photography, and most recently at The Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University. Her work has been published in The Sunday New York Times, Photo District News, Russian Esquire and Next American City Magazines and acquires into several private collections.

The Department of Photography & Imaging at the Tisch School of the Arts is a four-year B.F.A. program centered on the making and understanding of images. Students explore photo-based imagery as personal and cultural expression. Situated within a university, the program offers students both the intensive focus of an arts curriculum and a serious and broad grounding in the liberal arts.
