A Documentary by Two Kanbar Filmmakers is Chosen to Represent NYU in the American Pavilion at 2011 Cannes Film Festival
Morgan “Emby” Bulkeley

Emby, the short documentary directed by William Thompson and co produced by Ema Ryan-Yamazaki, both seniors in the Kanbar Institute at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, will screen at the American Pavilion’s Emerging Filmmaker Showcase as well as the Short Film Corner at this year’s Cannes International Film Festival.  The Festival will be held from May 11 to 22, 2011.

The film examines the life of Morgan “Emby” Bulkeley, an artist from the Berkshire Mountains with a mystical connection to nature.  Emby will be included as part of the American Pavilion’s Emerging Filmmaker Showcase, a competition started in 1989 to offer opportunities at Cannes for film students from around the world.  The film is one of the 16 finalists chosen and awards will be given out during the festival.  Emby will also screen in the Cannes Short Film Corner, an area of the festival that exposes films and filmmakers to leading industry professionals and distributors on an international level.

The two Kanbar filmmakers will be in attendance at the event.  This marks Thompson’s third festival experience after the successes of Astray (2009) and Heartbeaten (2011), both fictional short films.  Ryan-Yamazaki has directed, produced, and edited numerous documentaries for projects such as 8billionlives.com and is currently in post-production for her most recent film, Floating, Searching.
