More than 500 students to receive degrees; Dr. Claire Mintzer Fagin to receive Helen Manzer Award in recognition of exemplary leadership on behalf of the health of the nation.

More than 500 students to receive degrees; Dr. Claire Mintzer Fagin to receive Helen Manzer Award in recognition of exemplary leadership on behalf of the health of the nation                                     

New York University College of Nursing will confer degrees on 367 baccalaureate graduates, 122 master’s graduates, 6 advanced-certificate graduates, and 5 doctoral graduates at the New Amsterdam Theatre in Manhattan (214 West 42nd Street between 7th and 8th Avenues) on May 16, 2011.

In addition to celebrating the Class of 2011 graduates, NYU College of Nursing Dean Terry Fulmer will present Claire Mintzer Fagin, PhD ‘64, RN, FAAN with the 2011 Helen Manzer Award in recognition of exemplary leadership on behalf of the health of the nation. Dr. Fagin will also give the keynote graduation address.

A member of the College’s Board of Advisors, Dr. Fagin is known for her work promoting access to health care and for her contributions to geriatric nursing research. Dr. Fagin has been at the leading edge of new developments in health care and nursing and has developed programs to address these. She has extensive and progressive experience in nursing, and in health care and educational administration. Through teaching, practice, consultation, and participation in the formation of health policy, Dr. Fagin has had a vital impact in both public and private sectors. Dr. Fagin is a Fellow of the Institute of Medicine, the Royal College of Nursing, and the American Academy of Nursing, and she was inducted into the American Nurses Association Hall of Fame in June 2010.   

The 2011 Distinguished Alumna Award will be presented to Ellen D. Baer, MA ‘73, PhD ‘82, RN, FAAN, in recognition of her dedicated involvement in and service to NYU College of Nursing. Dr. Baer received both her master’s and doctoral degrees from NYU College of Nursing and was named a Distinguished Recent Alumna of the University in 1992. A scholarship bearing her name is open to all part-time and full-time doctoral students at NYU College of Nursing.

Dean Fulmer will also present the 2011 Distinguished Clinician Award for Contributions to the Clinical Enterprise to Theresa Brown, PhD, RN, in recognition of outstanding clinical leadership. Brown is a regular contributor to the New York Times blog “Well.” Her essay “Perhaps Death is Proud; More Reason to Savor Life” was included in The Best American Science Writing 2009. She is the author of Critical Care: A New Nurse Faces Death, Life, and Everything in Between.

The 2011 Humanitarian Award will be presented to Countess LuAnn de Lesseps in recognition of outstanding humanitarian efforts on behalf of patient-centered care. An American television personality and recording artist, Countess de Lesseps formerly served as a nurse in Connecticut.  She has been featured in publications around the country and internationally, including the New York Times, USA Today, the New York Post, Harper’s Bazaar, People, Entertainment Weekly, Life & Style, Woman’s Day, and the New York Times Magazine, and has made numerous television appearances, including Today, Good Morning America, Fox & Friends, and WCBS.

Additionally, members of each graduating class will receive the 2011 Valedictory Awards and Overall Distinguished Graduating Student Awards. Valedictory awards will go to Leslie Martin, BS; Jooyoung Lee, MS; and Margaret Eckert-Norton, PhD. The recipients of the Overall Distinguished Graduating Student Awards will be Johanna Timmins, BS; Nancy Roecklein, MS; and Ursula Kafulafula, PhD.
