                                   Exhibition dates: May 24 – June 11, 2011

The 80WSE Galleries of The Steinhardt School at New York University will offer a selection of the artist Arthur Carter’s latest sculptures in an exhibition entitled Arthur Carter: Orthogonals.  The show will feature approximately 25 orthogonals—wall reliefs featuring intersecting right angles made of varying materials, including stainless steel, bronze, and aluminum, some with painted sections.  The works range in size from 24 to 48 inches.  In addition, there will be two floor pieces, one bronze (49 x 39 1/2 x 28 1/2") and the other stainless steel (36 x 34 x 24").  Also included will be a quantity of preparatory drawings and paintings done by the artist, ranging from 8 x 6 inches to 30 x 50 inches.

Arthur Carter: Orthogonals opens May 24 and remains on view through June 11, 2011.  80WSE Galleries is located at 80 Washington Square East (between W. 4th and Washington Place).  Subway: N&R (8th St. Broadway). Gallery hours: Tues-Sat, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.  The exhibition is free and open to the public.

New York artist Arthur Carter had a long and successful career in investment banking before founding The Litchfield County Times and The New York Observer.  He was also publisher of both The Nation magazine and The East Hampton Star.  Carter’s career as a sculptor emerged from his work and interest in the graphic design of his newspapers.  He was soon producing maquettes of wood, clay, and copper wire, which evolved into larger constructions in silicon bronze and stainless steel — a number of which are on permanent public display in New York City.  Mr. Carter maintains a production facility in Roxbury, CT, as well as a gallery and design studio in New York City.

Carter has been a featured solo artist at the Tennessee State Museum in Nashville, and New York University’s Grey Art Gallery, among others.  In 2009, Harry N. Abrams published a comprehensive collection of his work, Arthur Carter: Sculptures, Paintings, and Drawings

Later this year the artist’s Orthogonals series will move to The New Britain Museum of American Art in Connecticut.

Arthur Carter has maintained a long-standing commitment to NYU.  Since 1985, he has been a trustee of the University and presently serves as chairman of the Board of Overseers of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.  In October 2008, the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute at NYU was inaugurated.

Arthur Carter: Orthogonals is a benefit exhibition for New York University’s 80WSE Galleries.  Proceeds from the sale of Mr. Carter’s works will help support the gallery’s exhibitions, publications, and educational programs.
