NYUCN's NICHE Celebrates Nurses Week

Leadership Training Program Starts Hospitals on Road to Improved Care of Older Adult Patients

New York University College of Nursing's NICHE (Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders) is celebrating National Nurses Week this year by inaugurating a series spotlighting NICHE Leadership Training Program (LTP) nurse alumni. National Nurses Week is celebrated from May 6th – 12th. The 2011 theme is “Nurses Trusted to Care.” The NICHE LTP trains a team of hospital staff to begin the process of becoming a leader in the care of older adults and a NICHE designated hospital.

“NICHE considers the nurse central to improving the quality of care for hospitalized older adults through the use of evidence-based practice,” says Marie Boltz, PhD, RN, GNP-BC, Associate Director, Practice, Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing – the NICHE founding organization. “To join in the celebration of National Nurses Week, we thought it appropriate to choose this week as the start of our series honoring the nurse graduates of our Leadership Training Program.”

Each week, starting the week of May 6th, profiles of the LTP graduates will be posted on the NICHE FaceBook Page.

The LTP offers a distance learning option where participants engage in a rigorous program delivered via a web-based platform and facilitated by the NICHE team. Offered several times a year, the program includes webinars, mentoring by NICHE faculty, on-demand access to tools and more. In all, 96 hospitals and over 400 individuals have attended the online LTP since its inception in September 2009. There are almost 300 NICHE hospitals in North America.

Registration information for the six-week, online LTP starting June 13, 2011, is available at www.nicheprogram.org/join-leadership_training_program.

About NICHE

NICHE is a national organization designed to help hospitals improve the care of older adults. NICHE hospitals seek to create an environment where older adult patients receive care that results in better outcomes. This climate of success encourages patients and their families to seek NICHE designated hospitals for their medical needs. The NICHE Network now numbers nearly 300 hospitals throughout North America.

NICHE is a program of The Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing at NYU College of Nursing funded in part with generous support from Atlantic Philanthropies and The John A. Hartford Foundation. For more information, visit www.nicheprogram.org.
