The New York University Creative Writing Program’s Spring 2011 Reading Series concludes in May with events featuring Yusef Komunyakaa (May 5), Pulitzer-Prize-winning poet Jorie Graham (May 13), and the NYU Veterans Writing Workshop (May 7). All events are held in the program’s Greenwich Village home, the Lillian Vernon Creative Writers House at 58 W. 10th Street, unless otherwise noted. Yusef Komunyakaa’s newest collection of poems, The Chameleon Couch, was recently published by Farrar, Straus, and Giroux. Chuck Wachtel’s most recent novel, 3/03, was published by Hanging Loose Press in 2010.

Friday Happy Hour Reading: Ann Hood, Paul Lisicky, and Alix Kates Shulman

The Red Thread, released by W.W Norton & Company in 2010, is Ann Hood’s most recent book. Paul Lisicky’s novel The Burning House (Estrucan Press) is out in May. Alix Kates Shulman’s most recent title is To Love What Is: A Marriage Transformed, a memoir published in 2008 by Farrar, Straus, and Giroux. Lisicky and Hood teach in the NYU Creative Writing Program.

Emerging Writers Reading Series with Guest Poet Nick Flynn

The Emerging Writers Reading Series showcases the student talent of NYU’s graduate Creative Writing Program and features established writers as special guests. Nick Flynn’s new collection of poems, The Captain Asked for a Show of Hands, was published in early 2011 by Graywolf Press.

NYU Veterans Writing Workshop Reading with Guest Poet Yusef Komunyakaa

The NYU Veterans Writing Workshop, founded by Ambassador Jean Kennedy Smith, welcomes recent veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to participate in free weekly creative writing workshops led by NYU teaching fellows. The year-end event will feature war-veteran writers reading original poems and stories.

Goldwater Hospital Project Reading with Guest Poet Matthew Rohrer

The heart of the Goldwater Hospital Writing Project is a weekly creative writing workshop led by NYU fellows for the Golden Writers, a group of long-term Goldwater residents with severe disabilities. The year-end event will feature the Golden Writers reading original poems.
