"Asians in the Ivory Tower" Forum Addresses an Overlooked, Misunderstood College Student Population
In an April 6 public forum hosted by the Steinhardt Institute for Higher Education Policy, the NYU Multicultural Alumni Group, and the Asian / Pacific / American Institute at NYU, a panel of speakers brought attention the often overlooked and misunderstood Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) college student population. Robert Teranishi, associate professor of higher education at NYU, presented findings from his years of research on AAPI students which served as the basis for his new book, Asians in the Ivory Tower: Dilemmas of Racial Inequality in American Higher Education.

A panel of experts then described how these findings could foster a deeper understanding of race and discussed how and why AAPIs are relevant in the broader discourse of diversity and equity in higher education. The panelists included Kiran Ahuja, executive director of the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, Walter Allen, Allan Murray Cartter Professor of Higher Education at UCLA, and Pedro Noguera, Peter L. Agnew Professor of Education at NYU.
