"The Irish Family - Who Do We Think We Are?" - Saturday, April 16

The theme of this year’s Glucksman Ireland House University Day is “Who Do We Think We Are? The Irish Family,” and features a day filled with lively readings, laughter, and debate – on Saturday, April 15, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at New York University’s Silverstein Lounge, 100 Washington Square East, between Washington Place and Waverly Place.

Opening the program will be writer  Colm Tóibín with a recitation from his recent collection of short stories, The Empty Family, and discussion of the dynamics of the Irish family in modern literature.

Betty Ford Institute president Dr. Garrett O’Connor will deliver the keynote lecture “Resilience, Shame, Alcohol and Survival: The Tragic and Triumphant Alchemy of Irish Cultural History” exploring the complex elements of the Irish historical experience and how that experience illuminates the Irish relationship to alcohol.

Glucksman Ireland House faculty members Professor Linda Dowling Almeida, Professor Marion Casey and Professor Miriam Nyhan will speak on the Oral History of Irish America project and what is revealed about the family.

Writers Pete Hamill and Peter Quinn will discuss immigrant parents and their American children, and Patricia Harty, editor of Irish America magazine, talks to actress Fionnula Flanagan (The Others, The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, Some Mother’s Son) about Ireland and Irish America.
