NYU Student Actors to Perform “Twelfth Night” in Washington Square Park
Rehearsal for Shakespeare in the Park's production of "Twelfth Night" with (l-r) Chris Kappel as Feste and Charles Sherwood Rudish as Sir Toby Belch

Free Performances:  April 30 at 1:00 and 4:00 PM.

Shakespeare in the Square, a student group at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, will perform William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, or What You Will for two performances, rain or shine, in Washington Square Park’s Holley Plaza, Saturday, April 30 at 1:00 and 4:00 PM.  The performances are free and open to the public. Seating is not provided.

The action of the play begins when the shipwrecked Viola washes onto the shores of Illyria and assumes the identity of her lost twin brother. Drinking, dancing, dueling, and a great deal of cross-gartering ensue.

Twelfth Night is produced and performed entirely by NYU undergraduate students. The production team comprises: co-directors Rose Bochner and Dan Hasse; Sabrina Jaglom, assistant director and stage manager; Spencer Kennard, assistant director and prop design; Ariel Lacey, costume design; and Chris Dubrow, music director.

Cast members are: Lei-Lei Bavoil, Chris Bellant, Alex Gerdts, Dan Hasse, Jon Hess, Chris Kappel, Charles Sherwood Rudish, Nina Smilow, Shannon Spangler, Hal St. Louis Farrelly, James Swanson, and Noam Tomaschoff.

Shakespeare in the Square was co-founded last fall by Bochner, who is also artistic director, and Hasse, who is executive director.  The two freshmen set out to provide the only opportunity to watch and perform Shakespeare's work as it was intended—“under the sun and in front of a loud, standing, possibly distracted audience.”
