NYU Recognized For Developments as a Global Network University

NYU has been named a 2011 recipient of the Senator Paul Simon Award for Campus Internationalization by NAFSA: Association of International Educators.  It cited NYU for “creating a global network by expanding its campus beyond U.S. borders, establishing NYU campuses around the globe, and promoting a new kind of mobility for students and faculty.”

The award is named for the late Senator Paul Simon of Illinois, a strong supporter of international education and foreign language learning; the awards recognize outstanding and innovative efforts in campus internationalization.

In addition, Fast Company magazine named NYU #1 on its list of education innovators, citing the opening of NYU Abu Dhabi.  It said that “NYU is shepherding the most successful and ambitious attempt yet to export overseas a full-fledged American liberal arts university.”

NYU President John Sexton said, “Speaking on behalf of the University, we’re very pleased by these recognitions of NYU as a Global Network University; they validate the idea of a new architecture for a university in the 21st century, and they honor the great strides we have already made.  We see validation, as well, in the actions of other major U.S. research universities, which have begun to emulate NYU’s global endeavors.  Yet, to the many students and faculty who already participate in the ‘circulatory system’ of NYU’s global network, these recognitions will not come as a surprise; they know the distinctive opportunities it provides for research, for teaching and learning, for building communities, and for preparing students for an increasingly globalized world.”

In addition to its degree-granting campuses in New York and Abu Dhabi, NYU has 10 global network academic sites on five continents.  Final discussions are underway to open an additional degree-granting campus as part of the network in Shanghai, China.  Additional network study sites are under development in Sydney, Australia and Washington, D.C.

According to the Institute of International Education’s Open Doors report, NYU sends more students to study abroad than any other U.S. college or university.  NYU also has one of the largest groups of international students and scholars among U.S. colleges and universities.
