Coral Bark Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum 'Sango Kaku') at Glucksman Ireland House

Flowers are only one element of the garden.  Especially in winter, we rely on other features like bark, foliage, and form to attract our interest. Coral Bark Japanese Maple is a prime example of a plant with great winter appeal.  The eye-catching bright red bark stands out in the winter landscape, especially in the snow.  This specimen was planted in front of the Glucksman Ireland House (click for map) on Fifth Avenue in the spring of 2009 and has thrived in this spot.  Watch out for the emerging 7-lobed bright green leaves on this tree as spring comes along!
