Drs. Joyce Anatasi and Kathy Hutchinson to be Honored at 2011 ENRS Annual Conference on March 25th

NYU College of Nursing Faculty Honored with 2011 Eastern Nursing Research Society Awards
New York University College of Nursing faculty members Joyce K. Anastasi, PhD, DrNP, FAAN [Pictured Left] and M. Katherine Hutchinson, PhD, RN, FAAN, will be honored at the 23rd Annual Scientific Sessions of the Eastern Nursing Research Society (ENRS), in Philadelphia on March 25th.

New York University College of Nursing faculty members Joyce K. Anastasi, PhD, DrNP, FAAN and M. Katherine Hutchinson, PhD, RN, FAAN, will be honored at the 23rd Annual Scientific Sessions of the Eastern Nursing Research Society (ENRS), in Philadelphia on March 25th.

"We are proud that ENRS chose to honor two of NYU's outstanding faulty members devoted to pursuing and promoting nursing research," said Terry Fulmer, Dean, NYU College of Nursing. "Because both NYU and ENRS are dedicated to creating a nurse research community in the Eastern United States, it is especially thrilling to be recognized and distinguished as an integral part of that very community. Dr. Joyce Anastasi and Dr. Kathy Hutchinson embody the frontline researchers who represent us as a uniquely east coast institution; they are among the best and brightest healthcare professionals contributing to nursing research in the 21st century."

Dr. Anastasi is receiving the ENRS 2011 Distinguished Contributions to Nursing Research Award for her outstanding, sustained record of contributions to nursing research;

Dr. Hutchinson is receiving the ENRS 2011 Suzanne Feetham Nurse Scientist Family Research Award for her outstanding contributions to the understanding of families in health and illness, family functioning; and family structure by the development and testing of interventions that improve family functioning along with research and scholarship that informs practice, education, and healthcare policy so that the circumstances and situations of families may be improved.

Biographies

Dr. Joyce K. Anastasi, PhD, DrNP, FAAN, is the Independence Foundation Endowed Professor at New York University College of Nursing and the Director, Division of Special Studies in Symptom Management and Director, Herbs, Nutraceuticals and Supplements.  She holds a PhD in Nursing from Adelphi University as well as a Doctorate in Nursing Practice (DrNP) from Columbia University. Dr. Anastasi also has a degree in Oriental Medicine and is a licensed acupuncturist.

Dr. Anastasi has written numerous articles on symptom management and integrative medicine and complementary alternative medicine (CAM).  She has been awarded federal funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Human Resources Administration (HRSA) to conduct research on symptom management for persons with chronic illnesses (eg. HIV/AIDS, irritable bowel etc.) and graduate education programs in the areas of HIV/AIDS and CAM.  

Dr. Anastasi was appointed to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Board on Health Promotion and Disease Prevention, Committee on the use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine by the American Public. Dr. Aastasi received the Presidential Teaching award from Columbia University in recognition for her outstanding teaching.  She was awarded the Excellence in Research Award from the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care and the New York State Distinguished Researcher Award.  Dr. Anastasi also maintains a private practice. 

Katherine Hutchinson, Ph.D., R.N., FAAN is an associate professor at NYUCN.  Her research interests include: adolescent sexual risk behavior; prevention of sexually transmitted diseases including HIV; family influences of adolescent health and risk behaviors; health behavior; and health disparities.

Dr. Hutchinson holds a PhD from the University of Delaware with a concentration in family studies.  She also holds a MS in Maternal Child Nursing from the University of Delaware College of Nursing, and a BSN from Michigan State University College of Nursing.  In 2001, Hutchinson completed a Post-doc at U. of Penn School of Nursing’s Center for Health Outcomes and Policy research.

Prior to joining the NYU faculty, Dr. M. Katherine Hutchinson was on the faculty at the University Of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, where she served as the founding director of the Nursing Undergraduate Honors Program and faculty advisor for the Minorities in Nursing Organization.

Dr. Hutchinson's program of research focuses on family, partner and social influences of HIV- and STI-related sexual risk behaviors among adolescent and young adult women and health disparities more broadly.  She has served as principal investigator and co-investigator on several NIH-funded HIV prevention intervention trials and descriptive studies related to parent and partner influences of sexual risk behaviors.

Dr. Hutchinson has published in many of the leading nursing and interdisciplinary journals and serves as a manuscript reviewer for Nursing Research, Research in Nursing and Health, Family Relations and Adolescent Health.  Dr. Hutchinson was inducted as a fellow into the American Academy of Nursing in 2008 and is currently the principal investigator of a four-year, NIH-funded project to develop and test a mother-daughter HIV risk reduction intervention in Kingston, Jamaica.

ENRS is comprised of RNs and others interested in promoting nursing research. It was established in 1988 as the research arm of the Mid-Atlantic Regional Nursing Association (MARNA) and the New England Organization for Nursing (NEON). The ENRS region includes Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington, D.C. ENRS is dedicated to creating a community of nurses interested in promoting research in the Eastern Region of the United States.
