New York University will host the second annual “Science Education Innovators Expo & Symposium” and keynote speaker Dr. Jane Goodall on Mon., Feb. 7, 2010, in partnership with the Jhumki Basu Foundation. The event, which runs from 4-7:30 p.m., brings together science teachers, students, researchers, policymakers, and corporate and foundation professionals to share innovative methods for teaching science in underserved schools.

The event begins at 4 p.m. with an expo and presentation of science projects by public school students from 30 New York City schools, including members of Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots. Celebrating its 20th anniversary on February 19, Roots & Shoots is the Jane Goodall Institute’s global environmental and humanitarian youth program. Topics of presentations include robotics, chemistry, physics, and more, with students and teachers on site to offer live demonstrations of their projects.

Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and UN Messenger of Peace, will deliver the keynote address at 5:30 p.m., which will be followed by a book signing. The title of the keynote is “Gombe and Beyond: The Next 50 Years.”

The expo and symposium will be held at the Helen and Martin Kimmel Center for Student Life and the Skirball Center for the Performing Arts, 60 Washington Square South (at LaGuardia Place) in Greenwich Village. [Subways: A, B, C, D, E, F to West 4th Street].

Reporters interested in attending should contact Tim Farrell at the NYU Office of Public Affairs at 212.998.6797 or by email at tim.farrell@nyu.edu.

The annual Sci-Ed Innovators Expo & Symposium brings together leading educational, government and corporate organizations with the science education community to explore how the visionary ideas of the late science educator and social activist Jhumki Basu can help transform science teaching and learning in urban American schools. Speakers include NYU President John Sexton; NYU Steinhardt Dean Mary Brabeck; and Founder of the Jhumki Basu Foundation, Radha Basu.

The Sci-Ed Expo & Symposium is part of a larger endeavor underway at NYU Steinhardt—the development of the NYU Steinhardt Institute for Science Education, inspired by the Jhumki Basu’s research and career.  NYU Steinhardt is co-hosting the Sci-Ed Innovators Expo & Symposium in partnership with The Jhumki Basu Foundation.
