NYU to Open Biomedical Chemistry Institute with Jan. 28 Symposium

New York University will open the Biomedical Chemistry Institute, which will promote cross-disciplinary research in areas aimed at improving human health, with a symposium highlighting the latest research in the field on Friday, January 28, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at NYU’s Silver Center (Jurow Lecture Hall), 100 Washington Square East (at Washington Place).

Sessions include: developments in methods to combat kidney stones, carbohydrate-based cancer diagnostics, anti-malarial drug development, and new antibiotics. For a complete schedule of presentations, click here.

Reporters interested in attending the event must RSVP to James Devitt, NYU’s Office of Public Affairs, at 212.998.6808 or james.devitt@nyu.edu.

The Institute, part of NYU’s Department of Chemistry, is an outgrowth of extensive cooperative efforts between the department and NYU School of Medicine, which has generated dozens of collaborations. It features a new laboratory on the 8th floor of NYU’s Silver Building, housing multiple research groups conducting studies that combine chemistry and biomedical sciences.  A tour of the new facility will be given at the conclusion of the symposium.

As part of the Institute's development, NYU has hired two new senior faculty members in chemistry. Professor Keith Woerpel is a renowned synthetic chemist with interests in malaria therapeutics, and Professor Lara Mahal is a chemical biologist widely regarded for her work on carbohydrates.
