NYU Receives Record Number of Freshman Applications

Both New York and Abu Dhabi Campuses See Significant Increases; Over 42,000 Total Applications

NYU today announced that it had another record year for freshman applications:   42,242 men and women applied for spots in NYU’s class of 2015, exceeding last year’s record for total applications by 11 percent. Applications for freshman admission to NYU have more than quadrupled over the past two decades.

With two portal campuses and 11 Global Academic Centers, NYU’s presence as the Global Network University is evidenced by another record year for freshman applications from around the world. NYU received 7,625 applications from students outside of the United States – an increase of 36 percent from last year.

41,058 potential members of NYU’s class of 2015 applied for approximately 4,800 seats at the Washington Square Campus of NYU, an 11-percent increase over last year. Of that number, 4,670 asked also to be considered for admission to the Abu Dhabi campus.

1,184 applicants asked to be considered for the Abu Dhabi campus only, a 24-percent increase over last year’s inaugural class at Abu Dhabi, and when combined with the 4,670 applicants interested in being considered for both campuses, represents 5,854 total applicants competing for some 150 seats at NYU Abu Dhabi, the World’s Honors College.

Randall Deike, NYU’s Vice President for Enrollment Management, said, “We are immensely proud and grateful that so many extremely talented high school students from around the world are interested in NYU, particularly given the economy and the declining demographics of graduating high school students.  Clearly they are attracted by NYU’s great strengths – its global presence and opportunities, the quality and range of its academic programs, and its vitality and entrepreneurial spirit.”

For the first time this year, NYU offered two Early Decision programs – Early Decision I (deadline: Nov. 1) and Early Decision II (deadline: Jan. 1). There were 2,968 ED I applicants (214 for NYU Abu Dhabi and 2,754 for NYU in New York), and 3,130 ED II applicants (365 for NYU Abu Dhabi and 2,765 for NYU’s New York campus). 459 Early Decision applicants asked to be considered for admission to both campuses. NYU has accepted 1,471 early applicants for the Washington Square campus and 59 for the Abu Dhabi campus from the ED I cycle.

Linda Mills, NYU’s Senior Vice Provost for Undergraduates and Associate Vice Chancellor for Admissions and Financial Support for NYU Abu Dhabi, said, “We knew that last year we had set the bar high when close to 900 students applied to NYU Abu Dhabi, which at that time, hadn’t yet even opened its doors. This year, following an extensive international outreach effort, and of course, reports of the remarkable success of our inaugural class of 2014, we have seen impressive growth in both the number of applications and in the already remarkable quality of NYUAD applicants.”
