La Maison Française of New York University will host a special edition of the ongoing “French Literature in the Making” series, hosted by Olivier Barrot, on Mon., Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. The evening’s special guest, Antoine Gallimard, will discuss the 100-year publishing history of his eminent firm. The conversation, which will be in French, will take place at La Maison Française, 16 Washington Mews [Subways: N, R (8th Street/NYU); 6 (Astor Place).]

In 1988, Gallimard became the head of the Editions Gallimard, one of the world’s most prestigious publishing houses. He succeeded his father, Claude Gallimard who, himself, had followed his father, the founder of this venerable enterprise now celebrating its centennial year. Gallimard is a unique, independent house, boasting more Nobel Prize winners and Goncourt Prize novels than any other French publisher. In 22 years at its helm, Gallimard has both followed a singular tradition and kept his company young and forward looking into the 21st century. One of the most respected persons in his industry, Gallimard was elected President of the French National Publishers Syndicate in 2010.

Olivier Barrot is a journalist, author, and television personality who plays a prominent role in French cultural life. He hosts the daily literary television program Un livre un jour on the France 3 and TV 5 channels. He also teaches at Sciences-Po in Paris and at the University of Montréal.  He is the co-curator of the Festival of New French Writing held biannually at New York University.

The event, which is free and open to the public, is presented by NYU’s Center for French Civilization and Culture, with generous support from the Florence Gould Foundation, and additional support from Open Skies, Sofitel, CulturesFrance, and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy.
