||FEBRUARY 2014 ISSUE
Much like many parts of the US, the weather has been unusually cold and snowy in New York City. Just this week, we were hit with a snow storm and followed by another with sleet and rain. Students are definitely experiencing the variety of weather winter can bring to New York. In this newsletter, we welcome new parents, remind you of how we communicate to students during inclement weather, the housing reapplication process, financial aid, study away opportunities, student health, and NYU News.
WELCOME NEW PARENTS
A warm welcome to the parents of new students starting at NYU this Spring. We hope you find these monthly newsletters helpful. As a reminder to all of our parents, past editions of the Parent e-Newsletter are available on the NYU Parent Resources webpage, as well as other helpful information. Visit www.nyu.edu/parents.
With current weather conditions (i.e. snow), please be aware that the University notifies students of closings or delays via their NYU email address, and posts notifications on the NYU website, Facebook, Twitter and under extreme conditions, via text. Students may also call the InfoAlert Recorded Hotline at 212-998-1220 or Department of Public Safety at 212-998-2222 for the most up to date information. Note that should students find it difficult to travel when the University is open during inclement weather, they should also communicate directly with their faculty and teachers. Current alerts are posted at www.nyu.edu/info.alert.
NYU students have an enviable opportunity to complement their degree program with an experience learning and exploring away from New York. NYU encourages students to take an academic journey led by top local scholars, artists, and professionals at NYU's facilities in Abu Dhabi, Accra, Berlin, Buenos Aires, Florence, London, Madrid, Paris, Prague, Shanghai, Sydney, Tel Aviv, and Washington DC. Students can also choose from international summer programs, or to participate in the University's international exchange program with some of the world’s most prestigious universities. Parent specific information is available on the website, nyu.edu/global/parents. Applications are now being accepted with priority consideration given to students who apply by February 15th. For more information, visit www.nyu.edu/studyaway.
2014-2015 UNDERGRADUATE HOUSING REAPPLICATION & ROOM SELECTION
Now is the time to start thinking about Housing for next year. As a reminder, students are guaranteed University housing for their entire undergraduate academic career provided that they continue to meet all application, payment, registration, and occupancy conditions. Students are not guaranteed a specific hall or room placement. Students who fail to meet the reapplication deadline will lose their renewable status and will be eligible for housing only through a non-guaranteed, non-renewable housing application process. Students who apply and pay by the deadline are guaranteed housing and eligible to participate in the online room selection process. Dates are as follows.
- March 3 - 13: Phase 1 - Housing Reapplication for eligible undergraduate students
- March 13: $1000 non-refundable/non-transferable reservation payment and online application are due
- March 31 - April 11: Phase 2 - Room Selection
FINANCIAL AID REAPPLICATION for 2014-2015
Currently enrolled students at NYU in New York who are US citizens of permanent residents and receiving financial aid, reapplication is required for aid for next year (Fall 2014/Spring 2015) by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form by the priority deadline of April 1. Click here for additional details.
For students who are not receiving aid, but would like to be considered, the FAFSA form is required to start the process for consideration.
For other students (international students) attending NYU in New York, who completed the CSS Profile last year and received NYU (non federal) financial aid, they will need to complete the CSS Profile again for scholarship consideration for 2014-2015 by the deadline of April 1.
The Office of Financial Aid will also be offering a number of workshops during the coming months to assist with the reapplication process. Click here for locations, times and dates.
SUMMER FINANCIAL AID
To be considered for summer financial aid, students should complete an online summer financial aid application located online at http://www.nyu.edu/financial.aid under "Applications and Forms". Please be mindful of the deadlines for full financial aid consideration for summer, which are included on the form.
This New Year was a very special one, as the Polytechnic School of Engineering officially
became NYU’s newest school on January 1. Our new School of Engineering makes NYU a
stronger institution by re-establishing capabilities in applied science, technology, and
engineering that we have not had since the closing of the Heights Campus in the Bronx in the
early 1970s. There has already been extensive collaboration between our institutions during the
past five years of our affiliation, including cooperative research projects among faculty and
wider academic opportunities for students. We are confident that the merger will open up many
new interdisciplinary opportunities for learning and research. For more NYU News, visit www.nyu.edu/parents and click on "Staying Connected"
DELEGATED ACCESS to STUDENT INFORMATION
Because of federal privacy laws (FERPA), students must provide permission before the University can share academic records and information. The Registrar has recently launched a Delegated Access portal which allows students to now provide online access to parent and family members. Currently, this access allows guests to view such things as emergency contacts, contact information, as well as any holds and a student's "to do list". Coming soon will be access to grades. We encourage you to speak with your student prior to making the access request. Information for both parents and students is available by clicking here.
eSuite is an integrated eBill and eCheck web portal, which provides students and their invited parents/authorized users to view electronic bills, recent account activity, make payments, enroll in payment plans, and more. Visit www.nyu.edu/bursar/esuite for more information.
