OTHER PROJECTS

Improving Our Facilities

NYU maintains and improves its facilities as often as it manages construction projects. While these projects may not have the same public face as others, we'd like to make sure that our community is informed that they're happening around the campus.

34 Stuyvesant Street -
Barney Building Renovations

Upcoming maintenance on the Barney Building at 34 Stuyvesant Street will upgrade the facility's life safety system and provide critical enhancements to spaces used by the NYU Steinhardt Art Department.

Renovations will begin in late May 2012 and are targeted for completion in mid-August 2012.

  • The renovations will primarily be interior, but there will also be roof work and a period of exterior sidewalk renovations associated with the installation of a new sprinkler system. There will also be asbestos abatement prior to the replacement of the roof. For more information on the University's abatement procedures please see the Frequently Asked Questions section of this webpage.
  • Occasional lift use will be required to hoist mechanical equipment to the building's roof. When a weekend lift is required on site, staging may be required tuyvesant Street. When this happens, advanced community notice will be given.
  • Deliveries will arrive primarily through the 9th Street side of the building.
  • Standard interior work hours are 7 AM – 5 PM, Monday through Friday. All schedules are subject to change depending on permitting, weather, and construction logistics. Should scheduling dates, times, or staging areas change, additional community notification will be given.

    35 West 4th Street and 239 Greene Street -
    Chill Water Tie-In

As part of the University's continued effort to become more energy efficient, NYU will be undertaking a project to extend the chilled water lines at the Education Block (35 W 4th St and 239 Greene St) bounded by Washington Square East, Mercer Street, Washington Place and West 4th Street; and tie them to the Co-Generation Plant facility at 251 Mercer Street.

The project will begin in March 2012 and is targeted for completion in August 2012.

    • The work requires excavating the area along Greene St, near the West 4th St intersection, and will affect the nearby street and sidewalks.
    • The work plans do not call for an entire street closure and at least one lane will remain open to vehicular traffic at all times. Accommodations will be made to ensure safe pedestrian access around the work site area.
    • Sidewalk sheds will be required on both sides of the street for the duration of the project and no parking will be permitted along the sidewalk curbs in the area being renovated.
    • The scheduled work hours are Monday through Friday, 9 AM - 3 PM. While no after-hours or weekend work is expected, advanced notification will be provided in the event it is needed.

    35 West 4th Street - Education Building
    (Interior Renovations)

The University is in the process of renovating areas in several buildings that make up the Education Block, which is located bounded by Washington Square East, Greene Street, West 4th Street and Washington Place. The renovation of these buildings will provide improved and more efficient spaces for the Steinhardt School.

The project will begin in spring 2012 and is scheduled to be completed in mid-2013.

    • Work is entirely interior and external community impact will be felt primarily through delivery and debris removals that utilize a door on Greene Street.
    • There will be periodic internal asbestos abatement as part of this project. For more information on the University's abatement procedures please see the Frequently Asked Questions section of this webpage.
    • After-hours abatement may take place, but the removal of abatement materials from the site is planned to discontinue at 9 PM.
    • Normal internal work hours closely follow New York City's Department of Building's regulations. Currently, interior work hours are 7 AM - 3PM, Monday through Friday.

While no after-hours or weekend work is expected, advanced notification will be given if extended work times are needed.

    244 Greene Street

The renovations at 244 Greene Street will be the new home for the English Department. The project will include internal renovations to accommodate academic space including internal asbestos abatement, roof replacement, external conduit installation in the courtyard, and sidewalk vault replacement work. The sidewalk vault work will occur for pedestrian safety.

The project is scheduled to commence in mid to late March 2012 and is anticipated to be completed in the spring of 2013.

    • Construction will take place primarily during normal working hours — 8 AM to 6 PM, Monday through Friday — as regulated by the Department of Buildings. Abatement hours are anticipated to be outside of these work hours — Monday through Saturday. After-hours abatement may take place, but the removal of abatement materials from the site is planned to discontinue at 9 PM. Sunday work may be required and advance notice will be given to residents if the work is necessary.
    • Staging will take place primarily along the east side of Greene Street between Washington Place and Waverly Place.
    • During Phase I of vault work, the east lane on Greene Street will be closed due to a shed that will be built to mitigate noise and the dump truck/dumpster location for demo debris removal. The work plans do not call for an entire street closure and at least one lane will remain open to vehicular traffic at all times. The pedestrian sidewalk on the east side of Greene Street will remain closed. The west sidewalk will remain open for pedestrian traffic throughout the job.
    • There will not be parking available on the street due to the shed and other project logistics. In addition, during Phase II of vault work, we anticipate that two to three parking spaces will be closed on the Washington Place side of the shed.
    • There will be periodic internal asbestos abatement as part of this project. For more information on the University's abatement procedures please see the Frequently Asked Questions section of this webpage.
