As per New York City requirements, sidewalk renovation around the perimeter of the building is scheduled to begin on Monday, November 7, 2011. Sidewalk renovation is expected to take approximately 4 to 5 weeks to complete. Pedestrian traffic will be allowed with appropriate safety barriers.
All sidewalks along the perimeter of 58WSS will remain closed due to the digging of catch basins and the repairing of the sidewalk. Pedestrian traffic will be re-routed to the North side of Washington Square South and the South side of West 3rd street.
The sidewalk on the west side of Thompson Street will remain open at all times. The sidewalks are expected to reopen by the end of November.
Work continues throughout the exterior and interior of the building. Two lifts will be on site starting the week of October 3, 2011. The lifts will be used to paint the exterior and install exterior trim. In addition, workers will be digging for catch basins for the building. This work should take approximately 3 weeks to complete.
A crane is scheduled to be brought on site on Tuesday, September 6, 2011. During this time, Thompson Street between Washington Square South and West 3rd Street will be closed, during construction hours (7AM to 6PM), to vehicular traffic and will remain open to pedestrian traffic along the west sidewalk.
The crane is expected to remain on Thompson Street for approximately 4 to 5 business days.

A crane is scheduled to be brought on site as preparations are made for work on the façade. Thompson Street between Washington Square South and West 3rd Street will continue to remain closed, but will remain open to pedestrian traffic along the west sidewalk. The crane is expected to remain on site until construction of the façade is finished.

The steel framing around 58 Washington Square South is now complete and work on the façade will continue into the early spring of 2011. Construction in the interior of the structure will also start this month.
Thompson Street will remain closed to traffic during this phase of construction between the hours of 7:00 AM and 4:00 PM Monday through Friday. Flagmen will remain positioned at the corner of Thompson Street and Washington Square South to guide pedestrian and vehicular traffic. The street will reopen after the workday and will remain open during the weekend.
There will continue to be regular concrete pours for the next few weeks. Currently, the sub-cellar, cellar, first and second floor have been poured.
Next week, pouring will begin on the third and fourth floor and then continue up to top floor over the coming weeks. They have also started installing some of the piping in the lower levels.
The hoist has been installed and will be operating on the site.
In mid-November a crane will be brought back on the site for additional lifts and remain on the site for the balance of construction.
All of the structural steel has been installed. As a result, the current crane that had been used to erect the steel will now be removed and replaced with a different crane that will remain on site for the next few months.
There will be increased activity on the site over the next few days as the construction team begins pouring concrete for the floors. They will begin with the sub-cellar level and work their way up the building.
In order to accommodate the future sub-cellar break through between the Kimmel Center and the new 58 Washington Square South building, plumbing pipes are required to be relocated at the Kimmel Center.
A complete water shutdown is scheduled to start on Friday, August 13, 2010 at 11PM at the Kimmel Center. The required piping relocation will take place on Saturday, August 14, 2010.
Work is expected to be completed and the system re-energized by Sunday, August 15, 2010.
The steel installation has started. Currently the steel for the basement and first floor are complete with the second floor pillars being installed this week. A new crane is scheduled to be brought on site Friday, August 6, 2010 that is slightly smaller than the current one, and it will remain on site for the balance of construction.
Steel installation will continue into September.
Steel installation has begun at 58WSS. During this time, Thompson Street between Washington Square South and West 3rd Street will be closed only during construction hours to vehicular traffic, but will remain open to pedestrian traffic along the west sidewalk.
A crane will be delivered in the next few weeks and remain on Thompson Street until all the steel is in place and the structure is built.
Activity will begin to pick up as the first phase of construction ends and Phase II begins. Foundation work will be complete within the next few work days. Mobilization for Phase II will begin the week of July 12, 2010.
During this time, Thompson Street will be temporarily closed during construction hours. The street closure is necessary for the crane that will be used during steel installation. At the end of the work day the street will reopen for traffic. The construction crew will begin installing steel on the north end of the site working south. The sidewalk on the west side of the street will remain open at all times. Additionally, there will be a sidewalk bridge installed on the north side of West 3rd Street behind the construction site. A pedestrian walkway will remain open at all times.
There will be work on Saturday, July 3, 2010.
There will be no work on Sunday, July 5 or Monday, July 6, 2010 in observance of Independence Day.
Work on the foundation and foundation walls continues as the completion of the initial concrete pours nears. Steel installation is scheduled to begin in early July.

This Saturday, May 8, 2010 a lane closure on West 3rd Street between LaGuardia Place and Thompson Street is scheduled from 7AM-3PM as mandated by DOT.
A traffic lane will remain open during this time for vehicular traffic and the southern sidewalk will remain open for pedestrians. There will be regular trucking activity during this time as the earth ramp on the south end of the site is removed. All efforts will be made to mitigate dust by wetting dirt before its removed from the site.
A lane closure on Thompson Street is scheduled for this Saturday, April 24, 2010. A street crane will be brought in to hoist a large piece of equipment onto the north end of the site. Once work is completed all equipment will be removed. In the event there are unforeseeable circumstance that causes delays on Saturday, then this work will occur on Sunday. Every effort will be made to avoid working on Sunday.
This is mandated by DOT for the scope of work.
On Saturday, April 17 and April 24, 2010, there will be a temporary lane closure on the north side of West 3rd Street. The mandated DOT hours for this closure are from 7AM-3:30PM. They will begin mobilization each day at 7AM, but work will not begin until 9AM as permitted by DOB.
This lane closure is for specially outfitted excavator equipment to remove the existing earth ramp on the south side of the site. All equipment will be removed once the shift is completed so it will not remain on site. Additional work on Saturdays is expected to continue for the next few weeks.
A lane closure will be in effect on Thompson Street to allow for concrete and foundation work for the new Center for Academic and Spiritual Life. The necessary permits have been obtained from DOT and enough street space remains to allow passage by emergency vehicles.
De-watering has begun on the site and will continue through the spring. There will be some additional work this Saturday, March 27, 2010 from 9AM-5PM.
Activity will increase in the next few weeks with more trucks as excavation continues in preparations to pour the foundation slabs. A lane closure on Thompson Street is anticipated in April.
This week the temporary boilers at Furman Hall and King Juan Carlos are scheduled to be removed. There will be some general construction noise associated with this activity, but it will happen during regular construction hours.
On Tuesday, March 16, 2010, there will be early morning activity at 58WSS. A large piece of equipment is being removed from the construction site. Per DOT requirements, this must be done between 4AM-6AM. We apologize for any inconveniences this may cause.
In the upcoming weeks, concrete pours for the foundation slab are scheduled to begin. There will be cement trucks entering and exiting the site along West 3rd street during this time.
Also, beginning the week of March 8, 2010, the site will need continual de-watering. De-watering is needed to pump the water from below the ground level. This work involves a motor comparable to that of a lawnmower running on-site 24 hours a day. The equipment will be enclosed and an additional sound absorbing material will be added to mitigate the noise.
Additional work is scheduled this Saturday, March 6, 2010 from 9AM-5PM. Preparations are being made for the high temperature hot water pipe installation on the northwest corner of the site, which is time sensitive work.
Once this work is completed, we anticipate that the boilers currently located on Washington Square South will no longer be needed and can be removed.

Testing will also be done on the welding for the HTHW piping.

NYU has worked closely with the Parks Department about the 6 trees along Thompson Street. The Parks Department recommends that the 4 most northern trees be removed, which will take place later this week.
The 2 most southern trees, closest to Thompson Street, will remain protected throughout construction.
The University is aware how important trees are to the quality of life of the community so once construction is completed more trees will be planted along Thompson Street.
The schedule for the asbestos abatement has changed. The abatement is now scheduled to take place beginning Thursday, January 14, 2009 and is projected to be completed by Tuesday, January 19, 2009.
Preparations for foundation work continue at 58WSS. In the next few weeks there will be increased activity along West 3rd Street as more soil and debris from the site are removed during excavation. The soil will be moistened prior to removal to mitigate dust. This is a common and effective technique used for this type of work.
The sidewalk bridge at King Juan Carlos (53 WSS) will be extended west on Washington Square South to Sullivan Street. It will be erected in front of the Kevorkian Center (50 WSS). The sidewalk bridge is being extended to carry the temporary piping from the temporary boiler located on Sullivan Street/WSS to KJC.
The extension of the sidewalk bridge will be erected on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 and is expected to be in place through March 2010.
A Board of Standards and Appeals (BSA) hearing has been set for Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at 1:30PM, 40 Rector Street, 6th Floor to address the building variance requested for 58 Washington Square South.
Asbestos abatement is scheduled to begin on Friday, January 8, 2009 and is projected to be completed by Tuesday, January 12, 2009. This work is weather dependent.

The University hires only licensed asbestos removal contractors, and adheres to rigorous DEP standards and policies for all abatement projects.
Repairs of existing chilled water mains and the installation of utilities on the West 3rd side of the 58 Washington Square South site are scheduled to take place the week of January 4 - January 8, 2010. In order to perform this work, a chilled water shutdown is required at Furman Hall and Vanderbilt Hall
The shutdown will begin on January 4, 2010 at 7am and will be completed by January 8, 2010 at midnight.
Excavation continues at 58 WSS. In the next few weeks preparations will begin for the shoring along the west edge of the foundation. In order to install the shoring, the contractor will pile drill several holes. This type of work will at times be loud, but this technique is much quieter than the alternative, pile driving, which is very disruptive.

A shutdown of the domestic hot water and heat in the Kimmel Center is scheduled for Saturday, November 21, 2009 starting at 11PM through Sunday, November 22, 2009 at 11AM.
This shutdown is required to disconnect the High Temperature Hot Water lines on the north west corner of the building, and reroute them for the 58 WSS site.
Excavation, foundation, and high temperature hot water work is scheduled to start at 58 Washington Square South the week of November 16, 2009. Work will include mobilization, followed by the start of excavation/foundation work and HTHW work.
Sidewalks will be closed along the perimeter of the site on Washington Square South, Thompson Street, and West 3rd Street. This will close a lane of traffic on WSS and one lane of parking on both Thompson Street and West 3rd Street to reroute pedestrian traffic around the construction zone.
This phase of the project is scheduled to take approximately six (6) months.
On Wednesday, September 23, 2009 there was a pre-construction meeting with the community regarding the 58 Washington Square South project.
As discussed, the mobilization of the site has begun. The scope of work includes the installation of the construction fence along the perimeter, a protective pedestrian walkway, the installation of a sidewalk bridge on WSS that will have the construction office on top of it and another sidewalk bridge along a small part of West 3rd street.
There will be a loss of parking along the west side of Thompson Street and the North side of West 3rd Street during this project. Excavation and work on the foundation will begin over the next few weeks and continue through Spring 2010. Once this scope of work is completed, work will begin on the construction of the building. The project is expected to be completed in Spring 2012.
