What is the purpose of construction?
A renovation project at 10 Washington Place will renovate the former Department of Journalism building with new faculty and graduate student offices, and conference rooms for the Department of Linguistics
How long will the project last?
Work began on September 15, 2008 with a projected completion date in fall 2009.
What work will be done on the building?
The building will be have significant interior renovations. The floors will remain; construction includes new offices for faculty and graduate students, new conference rooms, and a new elevator will be installed.
What are the hours of operation for the project?
Work will be conducted during normal working hours between 7am-6pm. Advance notice will be provided if work occurs outside of these hours.
What days of the week will work be performed?
Work will be done Monday through Friday. Advance notice will be given to neighbors if it is necessary for work to be performed on weekends.
What work will be done to the outside of the building?
Some of the windows will be replaced and there will be a new storefront. A new roof will also be installed and the mechanical penthouse on the roof will be enlarged to accommodae new AC equipment.
Where will staging for the project take place?
Most of the staging will occur on Mercer Street and Washington Place. There will be a container used at 3-5 Washington Place for asbestos waste. The sidewalk will remain open, but a shed will enclose the storefront when it is being replaced, and a sidewalk bridge will be installed in front of 10 Washington Place to protect pedestrians.
What are the plans for dust mitigation?
To reduce the amount of dust, walls will be sprayed with water just prior to demolition.
Will the height of the building be changed?
No. The mechanical penthouse on the roof will be enlarged, but the building height (roof/parapet) will not change.
