Every year, various offices, departments, and student groups around NYU organize charitable giving drives during the holiday season. One of the largest is the annual Holiday Toy Drive that the NYU Administrative Management Council and Office of Government and Community Affairs put on in conjunction with the 9th Police Precinct and Birch Family Services.
To collect items for the drive (nonviolent toys and books for children aged 4-13), NYU partners with local businesses who host our donation boxes and offer special discounts to anyone who drops in an item.
NYU students and staff contribute hundreds of toys and books to the neighborhood drive every year. Volunteers sort them for the precinct's party, at which NYU provide treats and live entertainment.
The 9th Precinct distributes the toys to children and families from all over the East Village, Lower East Side, and Greenwich Village, and to children at the Birch Family Center, serving those with special needs.
NYU is grateful to its 2013 partners: Jebon Sushi (15 St Marks Pl), the Half Pint (76 W 3rd St), Amity Hall (80 W 3rd St), Eva’s Supplements (11 W 8th St), and the Greenwich Village Mail Center (511 Avenue of the Americas). Additional donation boxes were located at Community Board 2 and Community Board 3, and throughout campus.
We are grateful to these businesses for their contributions, and especially to the Doe Fund, who helped us collect the donations from each of these sites.
The Office of Government and Community Affairs (OGCA) is the University's primary liaison to the community. OGCA fields questions, addresses concerns, and disseminates information on a variety of University topics, ranging from free and public events to updates on construction projects.
OGCA also builds partnerships with local community groups, BIDs, and nonprofits, and collaborates on a number of events and programs open to the members of the NYU community as well as local residents.
