Education Complex<br>35 West 4th Street

The University is renovating areas in several buildings that make up the Education Block, which is bounded by Washington Square East, Greene Street, West 4th Street and Washington Place. The renovation will provide improved and more efficient spaces for the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development, including upgraded faculty offices and teaching spaces. In addition, this project will connect the Education Complex to NYU's cogeneration plant.

Project Timeline


  • The project will begin in spring 2012 and is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2013.
  • Connection to the NYU cogeneration plant is scheduled for summer 2012.
    • The most noticeable portion of the project's is scheduled for mid-2012, when a packer truck for debris removal will be parked on Greene Street. During this period, and at other times requiring occasional use of a packer truck, elevated noise levels are to be expected.
  • Interior renovations of the fifth, sixth, and seventh floors of the East Building section of the Education Complex are scheduled for completion in spring 2013.
  • Interior renovations of the second, third, and fourth floors of the East Building are expected to be completed by October 2013.

Scope of Work

  • Work is entirely interior. External community impact will result primarily from delivery and debris removals which utilize a door on Greene Street. The periodic use of a packer truck will be required to handle debris disposal on-site during periods of intensive demolition and at the start of construction.
  • The process of interior renovation is as follows: demolition and removal of existing interiors, abatement (if necessary) of areas found to have asbestos containing material, delivery of new materials, and construction of new interior spaces.
  • There will be periodic internal asbestos abatement as part of this project.
  • After-hours abatement may take place, but the removal of abatement materials from the site is planned to discontinue at 9:00 pm.

Construction Update, December 12, 2013

Between December 27 and January 3, 2014 the building’s existing stone lobby floors will be restored.

Subsequent work will include milling on the building’s first and second floors, and various minor repairs in the cellar. Debris will be taken curbside on Greene Street using mini roller dumpsters, and transported away by trucks. The renovation is scheduled to continue through March, 2014.

Furniture deliveries will take place on Saturday, November 8, between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm. Deliveries will use the building's Greene Street entrance, just south of Washington Place.

Work is scheduled for completion by 2014. Interior work is required on several Saturdays and occasional Sundays for the remainder of the project. Work should not be noticeable to neighbors. Weekend work hours are 7:00 am to 3:00 pm.

Construction Update, September 4, 2013: Boom Truck Lift and Furniture Delivery

On Friday, September 6, a boom truck will stage on Greene Street, between Washington Place and West 4th Street, to deliver materials into the 3rd floor of the Education Complex.To minimize impact on neighborhood pedestrian and vehicular traffic the boom lift will start at approximately 7AM and be complete by 9AM.

For the next three Saturdays (September 7, 14 and 21) furniture will be delivered to the building via the Greene Street entrance. Delivery hours are 9AM-5PM.

The project continues to progress on schedule and should be complete sometime in fall 2013.


Construction Update, June 26, 2013: Project Update

Renovation of the East Building’s fifth, sixth, and seventh floors is now complete. Demolition on the second floor is 80% complete. Construction is underway on the third and fourth floors. Deliveries and debris removal will continue at their current rate for the next 2-3 weeks.

Construction Update, March 21, 2013: Boom Truck Arrival

A boom truck will arrive on Greene Street Monday, March 25th to deliver materials to the building's 5th floor. The truck will arrive at 7:00 am to minimize the impact on local vehicular and pedestrian traffic, and the operation will take approximately one hour to complete. Staging will occur on Greene Street near the building entrance, but the street will remain open to traffic while deliveries are take place.

Construction Update, January 31, 2013: Saturday Deliveries

Furniture deliveries will arrive to the building on successive Saturdays from February 2 until March 16, 2013. (There will, however be no deliveries on February 16 in observance of President's Day weekend.) Deliveries will occur between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm, and will utilize the building's Greene Street entrance.

The construction of the building's upper floors is nearing completion. The renovation of the building's lower floors will commence in late March or early April with removal of interior materials and demolition.
