The City of New York and several of its agencies has advised NYU that they will be conducting two major, long-term projects in the area surrounding Washington Square Park. These projects are not associated with NYU, but may affect areas near NYU buildings. We are actively working with the City to assess the impact on our facilities and, when possible, mitigate any disruptions.
As with all active construction sites, dust will be generated in the area immediately surrounding these two projects and noise will be generated by mechanical equipment, such as jackhammers and construction trucks. While the NYC Parks Department and the Department of Design and Construction (DDC) will employ available noise mitigation techniques, these projects will entail elevated levels of noise. DDC and NYC Parks will monitor operations to assure that they are within the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Noise Code Regulations.
NYC Parks is repairing and re-paving the entire perimeter sidewalk around the park. NYC Parks is conducting the project in a number of phases, beginning with Washington Square West.

DDC is scheduled to repair and upgrade the existing century-old water main system located on the periphery of Washington Square Park, which will require major construction work on many of the streets around and near the park. DDC will conduct the project in a number of phases with the first phase starting on Washington Square East between Washington Square South and Waverly Place. This project is estimated to take three years to complete (field and weather conditions permitting).
