Week of Service Attracts Over 1,200 Participants
NYU students and staff came out in record numbers for the tenth annual NYU Week of Service, Monday, October 2 through Saturday, October 7 celebrating NYU’s motto: a private university in the public service. Volunteers stirred and served at local soup kitchens, painted homeless shelters, walked for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, donated blood, visited seniors, crocheted and created cards for hospitalized children and prepared nutritious meals at God’s Love We Deliver for individuals living with HIV/AIDS and other serious illnesses.
Highlights of the week included the Lunchtime Service Series which kicked off Monday with a seminar hosted by Cross Cultural Solutions: Volunteering Overseas—focusing on opportunities, expectations and costs related to a short term volunteer abroad experience. Going Green in Gotham gathered a distinguished panel of guests discussing personal and institutional responses to the growing environmental concerns raised by the Al Gore film, An Inconvenient Truth. Hurricane Katrina: One Year Later brought together students and staff sharing their personal volunteer experiences in the Gulf Region and discussing upcoming opportunities for continued support of rebuilding efforts.
A tremendous thank you to all participants for making a meaningful difference in our communities and city.
