The Office of Community Service offers grants to help fund community service projects and service learning courses. Community Service Project Grants are offered twice per year and have application deadlines of November 1 and May 1. Service Learning Course Development Grants are offered once per year with an application deadline of July 1.
Community Service Project Grants
Community Service Project Grants formerly known as "ACTION" Grants help to encourage community service on the Lower East Side and Greenwich Village and in the neighborhoods adjacent to the many NYU schools and divisions. They encourage the participation of faculty, staff, and students in developing ways to address social or environmental issues and to initiate or expand service projects of an ongoing nature. Grants typically range from $100 to $500.
Service Learning Course Development Grants
The Office of Community Service also administers Service Learning Course Development Grants to support service learning courses. These funds may be used to develop or enhance undergraduate or graduate courses that include a practicum of a volunteer experience either organized by the instructor or developed by students as an integral part of the course. Grants range from $2,000 to $4,000 and are awarded for one-term, summer or yearlong courses.
In addition, the New York/Pennsylvania Campus Compact has awarded New York University a three-year grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service Learn and Serve America Program to strengthen and expand service learning throughout the NYU Campus. Service Learning courses which meet the criteria defined by the Learn and Service America Program guidelines may also be eligible for funding directly from this grant or a combination of Learn and Service America and Service Learning Course Development Grant funds. These applications are available on an annual basis. Application Deadline: July 1, 2008
New York Campus Compact Learn and Serve Grants
The New York Campus Compact Learn and Serve Grant funding opportunity provides grants of up to $2,000 for professional development and budget relief for faculty to incorporate service learning into new and existing courses. Grant recipients agree to place their students for a minimum semester-long commitment at University Settlement House to provide tutoring for K-12 youth and adult learners from disadvantaged backgrounds.
