Careers in the Arts
November 20, 2007
SNEAC brought together four leaders from the New York arts scene to share their experiences getting established in the arts and offer advice on how to succeed in creative careers. The panel was composed of professionals with management and policy-related careers in the arts, and represented various avenues within the field, including public funding of the arts, financing arts education, and corporate sponsorship of cultural activities; they were Luis Castro, Director of Arts Development, Time Warner, Inc., Kathleen Hughes, Assistant Commissioner, NYC Dept of Cultural Affairs, Patrick Scully, General Manager, Brooklyn Academy of Music, and Wagner Alum Jason Yoon, Director of Finance and Operations, DreamYard Arts Project. Panelists spoke about the specifics of their work in the field and shared their insights on pursuing a career in the arts and suggested strategies on how to best navigate the job market.
Social Theory, Politics & the Arts Conference (STPA)
October 11–13, 2007
For the first time, the 33rd annual STPA conference was held in New York City and was sponsored by NYU Wagner, the Research Center for Leadership in Action, the New York Foundation for the Arts, and the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation. STPA brings together researchers, students, policy makers, artists, foundation staff, and managers of arts institutions and advocacy organizations to explore key trends, practices, and public policy issues affecting and shaping the arts around the world. Last year, more than 300 conference participants attended from over 30 states nationwide and over 50 countries worldwide. During the planning stages and throughout the three-day conference SNEAC played an integral role in its success: SNEAC's Board were members of the Planning Committee that reviewed presentation proposals, helped gather the more than thirty NYU students who volunteered and thus gained free admission, and assisted the sponsors in gathering information and materials to distribute to attendees. We also hosted two events at this time:
- Dine Around the Square. SNEAC hosted a roundtable lunch at which two STPA panelists from the New York Foundation for the Arts shared an in-depth perspective on their panel topic: The Arts Go Green.
- STPA After Hours. SNEAC hosted an ongoing happy hour upon the closing of the second day of the conference.
