Our Mission
ALAS is committed to being a support system to Latino and Latin
American students of the Wagner community. We strive to significantly
enhance the education of future policy makers by providing social
and professional opportunities to students and faculty interested
in Latino, Latin American, and Iberian society, politics, and
culture.
Our History
In the spring of 1998, three dedicated Latinas saw the need to
bring new life to the Latino community at New York University's
Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service. Together they
founded the Alliance of Latino and Latin American Students (ALAS)
and gained the support of various student groups across New York
University.
ALAS immediately collaborated with the Students of African Descent
(SADA) at Wagner, Latino Law Students Association (LaSLA) at NYU's
Law School, Latinos Unidos con Honor y Amistad (LUCHA) of the
undergraduate Arts and Science division, and the Latino and African
American Student Union of the Stern School of Business to host
a film screening and discussion with Ms. Iris Morales. Ms. Morales
-lawyer, educator, and documentary film producer- facilitated
a discussion after showing her documentary on Latino activism
in New York City and across the nation in her film, "Pa'lante
Siempre Pa'lante-The Young Lords Party." This was the beginning
of a series of events and lectures that would engage the NYU community
in significant Latino/Latin American issues and give voice to
the Latino community.
Seven years later, ALAS continues to work together with various
student groups and departments in an effort to promote programs
and events that enrich our understanding of Latino and Latin American
politics, society, and culture.
