About Our Events
A Brief Overview
With emphasis on Seva, or self-less service, USA at NYU hosts feed the homeless sandwich drives, volunteers at health-fairs in underprivileged neighborhoods, and raises money for charity organizations through banquets and other formal arrangements. USA also organizes an on-campus Langar (literally meaning “free kitchen) demonstrating the concept of Seva for the campus community. An evening of free Indian food for all, USA at NYU’s members cook an authentic Indian meal and serve the food to all students and faculty while they are seated on the floor. This event is very popular at NYU and helps educate many on Sikhism by spreading awareness of its basic principles.
USA also hosts an annual charity event called NYU NACH, a bhangra party with a cause. Each year, NYU NACH looks for a charity to support and provides assistance in any way possible. In the past, NYU NACH raised over $1100 in proceeds for the widows and families of the victims who were massacred in the 1984 Sikh genocide. Authentic Indian food and a performance by NYU Bhangra all added to the event’s success.
USA at NYU participates in social events as well, such as a basketball tournament, ice skating and movie trips. Another annual event USA hosts is the annual tri-state keertan, the recitation of hymns from the Sri Guru Granth Sahib, the spiritual and eternal Guru of the Sikhs. At the Keertan, members of other Sikh Associations and colleges come together as a Sangat and form a community engaging in Simran, or remembrance of God.
This year, USA plans to launch a Sikh Awareness Week in April as a theme for Vaisakhi. The awareness week will comprise of a langar, a movie screening, a museum exhibition, a Gatka demonstration, and a workshop/seminar on equality.
