Football: "Freedom Toast" Stats

Dateline: October 24, 2008
FREEDOM TOAST SEES SEASON SLIP AWAY

The College Republican football team lost their second game of the season to The Most Diabolical Young Bols, spelling the end of the season for Freedom Toast. The final score was 34-15. The Freedom Toast defense could not hold an elusive quarterback and his fast receivers. TMDYB took to the air early and often, with two deep balls to put their team ahead 14-0. Freedom Toast simply could not generate an offense, and as such were taken out of the game with 8 minutes left in the game.

With the loss, the College Republican sports team have concluded their activities for the semester.

FREEDOM TOAST SWEEPS 3-GAME SET AGAINST TOP TEAMS!!!

The College Republican football team came back from a tough loss last week to pick up three wins this week. With Eric Gervey returning after missing last week to help out the Wide Receiver corp, and Hampton Williams making his first start of the season, Freedom Toast played well on both sides of the ball all day.

Even before the first kick-off, Freedom Toast had already picked up a win on the day, as "Unprotected Sacks" was forced to forfeit due to too few players. The Republicans were then challenged by "The Most Diabolical Young Bols" to play in place of the forfeited team. Freedom Toast accepted the challenge and the second game was on.

Game 2: Freedom Toast vs. The Most Diabolical Young Bols

Freedom Toast knew they had their work cut out for them against TMDYB, as this team, in the 9 AM game, had beaten The Tools (the team that had beaten Freedom Toast the previous week) by quite a large margin. Nonetheless, the Republicans saw this as an opportunity to prove to themselves that they could compete with the top teams in the league.

The first half of this game was a defensive struggle, as for the second half in a row Freedom Toast was held scoreless. Tensions ran high within the College Republican team on the field early on but cooler heads prevailed and Freedom Toast trailed just 6-0 at the end of the first half.

The second half was an entirely different story, as the offense moved the ball fluidly up and down the field and put points on the board quickly. It was the defense, however, that enabled the offense to maintain possession for a large portion of the game. To contain a quick and shifty quarterback, Rick Halmo decided to play on the defensive line and rely on his other defensive backs to play solid man-to-man coverage. The idea worked well and TMDYB's quarterback was limited in his running, and DB's like Greg Barasia and Jon Yochum were able to clamp down the passing game. Quarterback Steven Zucker was able to connect with Halmo, Gervey, Barasia and Hampton Williams for touchdowns.

Final score: Freedom Toast 32, TMDYB: 6

Game 3: Freedom Toast vs. The Med School

The Med School team for the past three years has been one of the top teams in the intramural league. Freedom Toast suffered their only losses last year to this team, so they knew full well they would have to step it up to take down this very athletic and fast team.

For the third time in four games, the Republicans scored on the first two plays of the game against the Med School. Though Rick Halmo failed to shake his defender with a "stop-n-go" route, Quarterback Steve Zucker still had the confidence to throw a bomb that Halmo managed to secure and break away from his defender with a score that put Freedom Toast ahead.

The hurry-up offense that the Med School ran really tired out the already fatigued Republicans, but a couple of defensive stops held off the Med School. A successful trick play allowed Steven Zucker to pick up his first receiving touchdown of the year on a pass from Rick Halmo.

With the score 19-13 in favor of the Republicans, Freedom Toast's defense managed to secure a 4th down stop that should have spelled defeat for the Med School. The ref unfortunately did not keep count accurately and rewarded the Med School with a 5th down. They were able to secure a fist down and eventually scored to tie the game at 19.

On the next drive, Rick Halmo ran a post route and burned his receiver as he moved toward the end zone. Steven Zucker's pass managed to find him in the back of the endzone and Halmo attempted to keep his feet in bounds while getting ripped up after diving on the track turf. The ref again mistakenly ruled Halmo out of bounds, though further review would prove Halmo did manage to get one foot in bounds, which would have been good enough for a TD. Given these two official mistakes, the Republicans were able to walk away from the field believing they had one by at least one touchdown. Stellar defense and role players stepping up were the keys to the game. With Halmo acting as a decoy much of the game, it was important that these receivers found ways to get open down the field, and this enabled Zucker to have a high completion percentage throughout the day.

Final Score: Freedom Toast 25, Med School 19.

Reflecting on the performance of Freedom Toast, QB Steven Zucker said, "I like what we were doing out there...I feel good about our team.

Freedom Toast is now 4-1, outscoring their opponents 142-69.

FREEDOM TOAST LOSES HEARTBREAKER AT THE BUZZER

The College Republican Football team were stunned as they watched their 13-point halftime lead turn into a 1-point loss against "The Tools." The Republicans dominated the first half, as Quarterback Steven Zucker connected with Wide Receiver Rick Halmo on the second play of the game for a score. This was the second time in as many games that the Zucker-Halmo combination connected for a touchdown on the game's first drive. Freedom Toast faced a tight battle through the first 15 minutes of the first half as the score was tied 12-12. With 5 minutes left, however, Zucker connected on a deep pass to Greg Barasia who took it to the house to give the Republicans the advantage. After securing a turnover on downs with 16 seconds left in the half and seemingly the entire length of the field to cover for a score, Freedom Toast embarked on a 2-play drive that culminated in Zucker throwing a "Hail Mary" bomb down 3/4 of the field that was caught by Halmo who managed to catch the ball over three defenders and fall into the end zone for his third TD of the game. At the half, the score was 25-12 Freedom Toast.

Unfortunately that was the last score the Republicans would get. Missed opportunities and lack of communication on offense and defense cost the Republicans in the second half. Poor defensive coverage led to a quick score by The Tools in the second half, and the receiving core for Freedom Toast failed to punch the ball in.

With 3 seconds left, and Freedom Toast up 25-19, The Tools managed to tie the game by finding one of their receivers in the back of the end zone on a 4th and goal play. The extra point, which has been the Achilles Heel for the Republicans all year, was converted by The Tools to seal the fate of Freedom Toast. Final score: Tools 26, Freedom Toast 25.

October 3, 2008

"Freedom Toast" wins first football game with ease.

The College Republican football team (also known as "Freedom Toast") started the 2008 intramural football season off right with a rout of "Alpha Bid," 60-18.
Senior Quarterback Steven Zucker threw 5 touchdown passes, including one on the first play of the game to Rick Halmo, and only 1 interception. Greg Barasia caught two of Zuckers 5 TD's and also contributed to the scoring by throwing 3 TD's of his own.
The scoring was well-rounded on the Republican side, as the 5 starting offensive players each scored at least 1 touchdown. Alex Nicolau scored his first touchdown for the Republicans on an inside post route from Barasia. Rick Halmo scored 2 TD's and also secured 2 interceptions on the defensive side of the ball. Eric Gervey added to the offensive assault with 3 TD receptions as well.
The score was 26-0 at the half, and the Republicans were able to put it into cruise control for the rest of the game, allowing for other QB's to take the reins and added a few trick plays as well.

The College Republicans are now 1-0, and the next game will be Friday, October 10, at 9 am.
