Queer Union

Queer Union is NYU's largest student organization providing social, cultural, and political opportunities for members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities.  Advocating with a focus on all students, we aim to increase awareness, build alliances, and actualize positive change.

Queer Union is the second oldest LGBT student organization in the United States, founded in 1969 as the League of Student Homophiles by a group of NYU students, including Rita Mae Brown.  QU members have participated in many historic demonstrations-- the Weinstein sit-in organized by Sylvia Rivera, extensive involvement in ACT-UP, and coordination of the first College Queer Leadership Conference at Princeton in the spring of 2004. In addition to activism, QU organizes a number of social events on campus for LGBT students and allies, including Diva Ball in the fall and Masquerade in the spring.

Queer Union has made significant contributions to the LGBT rights movement, yet the contemporary momentum of activism has been abated precisely because of the strides made by certain privileged members of our community.  Informed by an intersectional framework, QU interrogates multiple vectors of oppression to critique the political economy of visibility. We exist to propagate critical discourse, strive for egalitarianism, and orchestrate the change necessary for our community and the world.
