Talking Social Justice, Being Fashion Forward

29 OCT 06 | Our first big event of the year was a success! On October 29th, we held a Social Justice Conference @ NYU's Kimmel Center. From 12:30PM till 7PM, participants talked up social justice with topics ranging from education policy to public health. (List of participants)

After the conference, we ended the night with a wonderful Fair Trade Gala at Think Coffee. With over 100 guests in attendance, it was a tremendous success.

As a Transfair USA sponsored Fair Trade month event, the Gala focused on fair trade fashion and featured both local and national designers: Edun, No Sweat, Fair Indigo, GomiNYC, Auh2o, Counter Sourcing Fair Trade Apparel, and jewelry from Flavors of Life.

The night served as both the after-party to United for Change: The Social Justice Conference at NYU and as a preview to Fashion Forward: The Fair Trade Revolution, a socially-conscious fashion show to be held in April 2007.

Students and professionals had a chance to mingle and network while indulging on some delicious fair trade treats donated by interrupcion*. Joe Falcone from Counter Sourcing made an appearance to talk about his goal to get a line of fair trade apparel into the NYU Bookstore, and students had the opportunity to learn about Oxfam America @ NYU's work and sign our "Leave a Mark on Aramark" petition to get fair trade coffee in all of NYU's dining halls.

We give a special thanks to Think Coffee for lending us their space, and we would like to give a very big thank you to all the volunteers and participants for helping out and joining us!
