Fasting for a Cause

16 NOV 06 | We had our annual Hunger Fast on November 16, 2006. There were over 60 participants who fasted from morning to evening on the day of the fast. In the evening, fasters gathered to break the fast together, reflect on their experience with hunger, and learn more about world hunger issues. The fast was co-sponsored by 2nd Street Social Justice Coalition and Residence Hall.

On the day of the Fast, fasters wore bright green "I Fought Hunger Today" stickers to show their solidarity in the fight against hunger. Fasters skipped breakfast and lunch and donated their savings to Oxfam America. Donations were sent to Oxfam to aid in Oxfam's direct relief and long term development programs that combat hunger and poverty worldwide. In the evening, fasters gathered at 2nd Street Residence Hall and reflected on their experience with hunger that day.

During the break fast, participants learned about hunger issues including malnutrition and chronic hunger. McKenna Morrigan from Action Against Hunger, an organization dedicated to providing direct relief to people in times of conflict or war and also facilitating long term development programs to bring people out of chronic hunger and malnutrition, led a discussion on these issues and explained further how Action Against Hunger was fighting hunger around the world.
