Child Slavery in YOUR Halloween Chocolate?

31 OCT 05 | We asked this to the student body throughout the afternoon on Halloween, and the response was phenomenal! Once learning that Nestle used child slavery to produce their chocolate, everyone was enthusiastic to sign letters to Joe Weller, the CEO of Nestle. As a global university, we cannot support corporations that condone such abuses. We must encourage them to implement fair treatment and fair trade. In this generation, it is the only acceptable measure. There are simply no excuses.

We handcuffed the CEO of Nestle to Child Slavery, and for those who wanted a sample of Nestle chocolate, they were forced to have their picture taken with these two figures, with the caption of "SLAVE OWNER." When consumers realize exactly how they are contributing to the problem, they will create change. We cannot live with ourselves if we know that we are eating from the hands of impoverished child slaves.

For those who wanted a delicious piece of fair trade chocolate, however, all they had to do was sign a letter to the CEO of Nestle. We received 96 signatures, which were sent to Nestle with a letter from Oxfam @ NYU encouraging them to accept their abuses and begin to make serious change. Thanks everyone!!
