Venez diner avec vos amis du Cercle! Join us for our first event of the spring semester.
It will be a casual evening where we'll be getting to know one another better over
dinner and fun games. If you've been meaning to check out Le Cercle but didn't get a
chance last semester, this is the perfect time. We'll also let you know about all our
upcoming spring events (including some great programs co-hosted with NYU's Il Circolo
Italiano). If you plan on attending, kindly RSVP so that we can get adequate food. To
RSVP, please click here.
La Maison Française of NYU
offers a special invitation to members of Le Cercle Français:
Please join us on Wednesday, January 18, 2006 at 7:00 p.m.
for a lively illustrated lecture by Jean PLANTU followed by a reception.
Plantu is the most famous French editorial cartoonist.
He has worked for Le Monde since 1972. His political cartoons,
encapsulating French and international current events in witty and
often biting caricatures and wordplay, are often featured on the
newpaper's front page.
He will show how a cartoonist works, and will talk about journalistic
circles and the media in France with regard to cartoons.
He describes his talk as follows:
"I will explain how, once I've been given a subject by my Editor-in-Chief,
I try to transform news information into an editorial image. I should also say
that at Le Monde, it is possible to make editorial cartoons that stray from the
newspaper's view. This sometimes happens and I will give some examples in my lecture.
It's a great opportunity for free speech. The "politically correct" movement has somewhat
paralyzed the media, and the cartoonists, along with the columnists, have become the last line
of defense against it. I should mention that I move around a lot during my lectures to create
an energetic mood and I like to have a question and answer session: I often answer questions
through drawings."
Venez parler en français avec vos amis du Cercle! All are welcome, but we will encourage
everyone to speak french, as that is after all a major aspect of French Culture. Comme d'habitude,
food and beverages will be served to sustain your French speaking abilities.
When: Friday, December 9th at 6:00pm
