Catastrophe in Japan: 3/11 Photo Exhibition

On April 8th, JSO held the opening night for the recent Japan earthquake and tsunami photo exhibition to raise awareness and donations at the NYU Kimmel Center. Around 80 people showed up that night and we were able to collect $266, which will be donated to the Japanese Red Cross.

The Mainichi newspaper also has an article about this event through Kyodo News:

Japan disaster photo exhibition offers hope and reality

NEW YORK(Kyodo) -- Japanese students at New York University on Friday started hosting an exhibition of news photos of Japan hit by the deadly earthquake and tsunami as part of support efforts for their home country.

"Catastrophe in Japan: 3.11 Photo Exhibition," running through April 18 under the auspices of Kyodo News, is intended to offer visitors a chance to see not only the plight of the disaster-hit areas but also heart-warming scenes attesting to people's power to survive through the ordeal, organizers said.

The admission fee to the exhibition at the university's Kimmel Center in downtown Manhattan is up to visitors, which will all be donated to the Japanese Red Cross Society to help Japan, they said.

"I hope this reception will also be a place, especially for our fellow Japanese, to meet other members of our community and share thoughts on the disaster, and about what we can do to support while living faraway from Japan here in New York," said Naoko Koda, graduate student at the university and president of the Japan Student Organization there, the host of the event.

The event is co-sponsored by the Japan International Club and the Off Campus Student Council at the university.

Join us in helping the Japan Earthquake Victims

We extend our deepest condolence to the people in Northeast Japan and those who have family and friends in Tohoku areas.

New York University Japanese Student Organization (NYU JSO) has decided to collect donations to aid victims of the Tohoku earthquake in Japan and send it to the Red Cross relief fund. We are an official NYU student organization which mainly consists of students from Japan and of Japanese descent.

Japan experienced the worst earthquake and tsunami in the nation's history on March 11. It has been reported that the death toll could top over 10,000. The Japanese government also declared Nuclear Emergency on the same day as radio active hazards were released after the atomic power plants were damaged by the earthquakes and tsunami in Fukushima. The victims of the radioactive exposure was reported to be 160 as of March 13. Many cities and towns that experienced the massive earthquakes and tsunami on Friday are among the Japan’s most aging areas located in farming and fishing regions. Some villages on the Pacific Coast vanished entirely, leaving many people without a home.

Japan received offers of assistance from the international community, including:

Australia, Taiwan, United States of America, Republic of Korea, China, Mexico, Thailand, New Zealand, Israel, Singapore, Indonesia, Azerbaijan, India, Russia, Turkey, Germany, France, Belgium, Ukraine, Slovakia, United Arab Emirates, Switzerland, Hungary, Poland, Jordan, United Kingdom, European Union, Chile, Spain, Greece, Hong Kong, Pakistan, Denmark, Serbia, Uruguay, Mongolia, Ecuador, Iran, Kyrgyz Republic, Malaysia, Argentine, Philippines, Canada, Italy, Sweden, Kosovo, Iceland, Norway, Romania, and Slovenia.

As students from Japan studying at NYU, we would like to help people in Tohoku while appreciating warm support and deep condolences from the international community.

Please help us raise a disaster relief fund through:

We also decided to hold a fund raising event next week or so. We will make an announcement as soon as we have a plan. Please follow us at Facebook: NYU JSO

For any questions, please email to: jsoclub@nyu.edu

Sincerely yours,

Naoko Koda
JSO President

Update 2011-03-16 00:04:35: We decided to stop doing the fund raising by ourselves due to legal concerns. We will take full responsibility of donating the funds we have raised so far to the proper channels. Thank you very much for your help.
