The Tisch Center is named for Preston Robert Tisch, a pioneer and visionary who has been recognized throughout the world for his leadership within the hospitality and sports industries. ![]() Chairman, Loews Corporation Chairman and Co-Chief Executive Officer, New York Giants Football Team Trustee, New York University Preston Robert Tisch is the Chairman of Loews Corporation—one of the country's largest and most successful financial companies, and Chairman and Co-Chief Executive Officer of the New York Giants football team. Loews Corporation is one of the largest diversified financial corporations in the United States. The company's history dates back to a summer camp in New Jersey run by Mr. Tisch and his brother Laurence, followed by the purchase of a hotel in Lakewood, New Jersey and the formation of Tisch Hotels, Inc. In 1959, the Tisch brothers bought a controlling interest in Loews Theatres, Inc., a real estate-rich theater chain. This investment formed the basis for the modern day Loews Corporation, which was created in 1969. The theater company was sold in 1985. Loews subsidiaries include CNA Financial Corporation; Lorillard, Inc.; Diamond Offshore Drilling, Inc.; Loews Hotels; Texas Gas Transmission, LLC; and Bulova Corporation. Mr. Tisch served as Postmaster General of the United States from August 1986 until returning to New York in March 1988. Prior to his appointment as Postmaster, he served as President and Chief Operating Officer of Loews Corporation and its corporate predecessor, Loews Theaters, Inc. Upon returning to Loews Corporation, he became Co-Chairman and Co-CEO, sharing the titles with his late brother, Laurence Tisch. Throughout his career, Mr. Tisch and his family have been significant contributors to the City's human services, educational, civic, business and charitable communities. Prior to being named Postmaster General, he served as Chairman of the New York Convention & Visitors Bureau for 19 years, and currently serves as the Bureau's Chairman Emeritus. He was also founding Chairman of the New York City Convention and Exhibition Center Corporation and Chairman of the Citizens Committee for the Democratic National Conventions held in New York City in 1976 and 1980. In May 1990, Mayor David Dinkins appointed Mr. Tisch New York City's Ambassador to Washington. Through 1993, he served as a liaison between the City of New York and his friends and colleagues in both the national government in Washington and the business community in New York City. In February 1991, Mr. Tisch purchased a 50% interest in the New York Football Giants and he assumed the position of Chairman & Co-Chief Executive Officer of the organization. He is also a member of the National Football League's Finance Committee. From 1990-1993, Mr. Tisch served as Chairman of the New York City Partnership, Inc. and the New York Chamber of Commerce and Industry, where he was instrumental in developing a campaign to enhance New York's position as an international business center. He remains an active member of both organizations, where he continues to serve on their Boards of Directors. From May 1997 to May 1998, he also served as Chairman of New York City Public Private Initiatives Inc., a quasi city organization which funds important community programs. ![]() raised in excess of $300,000 for Tisch Center scholarships. (2004) Mr. Tisch is a Trustee of New York University, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He served on the organizing committee for the 1990 Economic Summit of Industrialized Nations held in Houston, and was Chairman of the United States Capital Preservation Commission. A founding Director of Citymeals-on-Wheels, he served as President of the Board of Directors from 1993 through 2002, and remains active on the Board as Honorary Chairman. Mr. Tisch is also co-founder and Chairman of Take the Field, a non- profit organization which is rebuilding the athletic facilities of NYC's public high schools, including the design, construction and fundraising for the projects. Take the Field is a model public/private partnership which has raised over $130 million in public and private dollars. Born in 1926, Mr. Tisch is a native of New York City. He attended Bucknell University before entering the Army in 1944. After military service in World War II, he earned a B.A. degree in economics from the University of Michigan in 1948. Mr. Tisch is married to the former Joan Hyman, and lives with his wife in New York City and Harrison, New York. They have three children, Steven, Laurie and Jonathan. Go to Main Page |
