Shinyoung Park
Seoul, Korea

M.S. in Hospitality Industry Studies
May 2005

Contact Info:  syp227@nyu.edu

Education:  B.S. in Business Administration at Sogang University
(Seoul, Korea)

Recent Industry Experience:  Conference Assistant Intern, 26th Annual NYU International Hospitality Investment Conference

For Shinyoung Park, her path to the Tisch Center began thousands of miles away in Korea. A financial analyst by trade, Park had no idea that her interest in changing careers to purse event planning would lead her to New York City. She has enjoyed every moment of her decision to leave the comforts of her homeland, for the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple. Park looks forward to completing her degree, and eagerly awaits to discover where the future will take her next.

HTGSS:  Where have you traveled?
SP:  I've travelled to Japan, Thailand, France, lots of places. In 1999, I spent a solid month backpacking through 10 European countries. During that trip, I found myself strongly drawn to Italy and Spain, and in the near future, I'd like to return to both of those countries.

HTGSS:  What are some of your most memorable moments during your travels?
SP:  During this past Spring Break, I spent a whole week in Paris with my friend, who studies art history. She was working at the association of the Hanbok (Korean Traditional Clothes) Museum in Paris. Though construction on the museum had not been completed, there was a small, preliminary exhibition area. It was fascinating to see so many Parisians entering, and expressing so much interest in the artifacts on display.

HTGSS:  What do you enjoy most about traveling?
SP:  I really do love traveling. Exploring the world, and experiencing different cultures provokes new ideas, so for me, travelling is mentally stimulating and refreshing.

HTGSS:  Have you always had an interest in pursuing a career in hospitality or tourism?
SP:  Actually, no. I was working as an intern at a cosmetic company in Korea, and as the internship was drawing to an end, I asked myself, 'What is the most valuable thing I have learned from the internship?' The first thought that came to mind was 'the joy of working together.' It was after attending various special events while in Korea, that I became interested in a career as a convention organizer.

HTGSS:  How did your lack of hospitality or tourism industry experience affect your decision to attend graduate school?
SP:  I never felt my background prevented me from exploring new challenges in the hospitality or tourism industries. I knew that I could obtain the necessary experience for which I yearned. In fact this past summer, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to work as a Conference Assistant intern at the 26th Annual NYU International Hospitality Investment Conference. It was an extremely valuable experience, and helped me to better understand the world of conference management. An opportunity, such as this, was just one of the many reasons why I decided to attend the graduate program at the Tisch Center.

New York City's Times Square. (2003)

HTGSS:  What is the greatest benefit to attending a graduate program in New York City?
SP:  I was first drawn to the Tisch Center because of its location. I have so much fun living and attending school in New York City. This is a place where a person can be exposed to so many different opportunities and experiences.

HTGSS:  Which course in the graduate program have you most enjoyed?
SP:  My favorite, thus far, has been Tourism Product Development with Dr. Messerli. I enjoyed the diversity of topics presented by each student. Each of us had the opportunity select these topics based on our own interest. This situation made for informative and lively class discussions.

HTGSS:  What advise would you give prospective students considering the Tisch Center for graduate school?
SP:  Though I did not have any, I would highly recommend that prospective students obtain some hospitality or tourism industry experience. No matter what industry position you accept, or how long you are employed in that position, the experience will prove invaluable to you during your studies.

HTGSS:  Where would you like to see your career in 10 years?
SP:  Lately, I've been wondering where I can best use the knowledge and skill sets I have obtained while in the graduate program. In 10 years, I hope that I would have acquired experience as a financial advisor for hospitality investments. I would also like to be in the position to develop a multi-use Korean Center in New York City, which would have restaurants, small museums, etc.

HTGSS:  When you look back on the time you have spent at the Tisch Center, what will you have gained most from this experience?
SP:  Friends for a lifetime.
