Bronx, New York M.S. in Tourism and Travel Management January 2006 Contact Info: tlg4@nyu.edu Education: B.A. in Business Administration at Franklin and Marshall College (Lancaster, Pennsylvania) How influential are the words from a presentation on the Tisch Center hospitality and tourism programs? For Taneika Grant, those words were life changing. After hearing Dr. Warner, Tisch Center Program Director, speak at an information session, Grant decided to pursue her graduate degree, though admitting to never having had a strong interest for a career in hospitality or tourism. Dr. Warner's presentation unleashed a desire in Grant to combine her love for travel and interest in Caribbean history, into a future career as a developer of cultural tourism. HTGSS: What are some of the destination to which you have traveled? TG: Domestically, I have visited Florida and Las Vegas. Internationally, I have traveled primarily to Caribbean islands such as Jamaica, Barbados, Grand Cayman, St. Lucia, Bahamas, St. Thomas, Antigua, Labadee, and Haiti. In the future, I would like to travel throughtout Europe, Australia and New Zealand. All of these places have very popular and unique tourism products that I would like to experience. HTGSS: What types of activities do you enjoy when traveling to new destinations? TG: I enjoy both the common, and not so common type of activities. One of the most memorable was a submarine ride to the ocean floor in Barbados, where I was able to observe various marine life in their natural habitat, as well as view a shipwreck up close. Whenever I travel, it is usually a family affair. We all love to get an insider's view of the places to which we travel. I always make it a point to tour the residential areas of the islands I visit. Whenever possible, I sample the native foods, and enjoy studying the local art and culture. ![]() St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands. (2003) HTGSS: Have you always had an interest in pursuing a career in travel or tourism? TG: I never had a major interest in pursuing a career in the tourism industry, until I attended a lecture by Dr. Warner about the degree programs offered at the Tisch Center. He helped me realize that I could pursue a tourism career, and have the opportunity to work in an industry that I would truly enjoy. HTGSS: What is the greatest advantage of attending the Tisch Center? TG: I decided to attend the Tisch Center because of its location–New York City. The Tisch Center has a reputation for offering great hospitality and tourism programs for those who are seriously interested in pursuing careers in these industries. So, I would say that the greatest advantage of the program for me is New York City, and its enormous tourism industry. There are just so many types of tourist attractions and events right at your fingertips. Ironically, the greatest challenge of being in New York City is simply finding the time to experience all of its amazing tourism offerings. HTGSS: What courses in the graduate program have you found most rewarding? TG: I have enjoyed Tourism Planning and Tourism Product Development, both taught by Dr. Messerli. Each of these courses have helped me become more aware of the various types of tourists as well as tourism products that exists. These courses also allowed me to apply my personal interests to the topics discussed and researched during the semester. ![]() of the Bahamas. (2001) HTGSS: What advice would you provide to prospective students considering the Tisch Center? TG: I would tell prospective students that the Tisch Center offers great programs in hospitality and tourism. The professors are industry professionals, who share real world experiences, as well as invite guest speakers who also share their expertise on the topics that are discussed in class. But, be prepared to work hard, and to be challenged while studying in one of the most diverse cities in the world. HTGSS: Where would you like to see your career in 10 years? TG: I see myself as an influential figure in the field of cultural tourism, event tourism or a combination of the two. I would also like to be involved in the movement for sustainable tourism, particularly in the Caribbean. HTGSS: How does the Tisch Center best serve your professional goal? TG: This program provides me with knowledge that will assist me in obtaining my future goals. Through this graduate program, I am broadening my horizons, and gaining an in-depth understanding about tourism products that currently exists as well as how to develop strategies for tourism products that positively impact all stakeholders.
