Profession:  Attorney serving the Real Estate, Design Professional and Construction Industries

Company:  John E. Osborn P.C. Attorneys and Counselors at Law (New York, New York)

Website:  www.osbornlaw.com

Education:  B.A. in Political Science at State University of New York, New Paltz (New Paltz, New York); J.D. at University of South Carolina Law School (Columbia, South Carolina)

Industry Organizations:  Member, Hotel Association of New York City; Member, American Hotel and Lodging Association (AH&LA)

Tisch Center Courses:  Hospitality, Tourism and Travel Law (Undergraduate Program), Legal Issues in Hospitality (Graduate Program)

With over 25 years of legal experience, John Osborn knows the world of law, specifically construction, environmental and real estate litigation. His firm, John E. Osborn P.C., has earned a reputation for troubleshooting problems on complex or failed construction and environmental projects. The firm's owner-clients include hotels, restaurants, nightclubs, healthcare facilities, museums, airports, school districts, office buildings, industrial properties, auto dealers, apartment complexes, nursing homes, colleges and universities.

Osborn not only practices law, but he is also an educator and author. Students enrolled in his courses benefit from his ability to translate his real world knowledge into blueprints for successful project developments.

HTGSS:  How did you become interested in pursuing a career in law?
JO:  Actually, I pursued law because I wanted a profession where I could combine my interest in real estate development and construction, with my desire to help people.

HTGSS:  In what areas does your law firm specialize?
JO:  I am the Principal Partner at a law firm whose practice concentrates in construction and environmental law, representing large property owners including hotels, restaurants, colleges, universities, school districts, commercial and residential properties and healthcare institutions.

HTGSS:  How did you become involved with teaching at the Tisch Center?
JO:  I learned about the opportunity to teach at the Tisch Center when I participating as a speaker at a NYU International Hospitality Industry Investment Conference, a few years back. After hearing about the programs offered at the Tisch Center, I decided I wanted to pursue becoming an instructor.

I started teaching in the Graduate Program in 1996, and then in 2001, I also began teaching in the Undergraduate Program. The greatest thrill of being an instructor at the Tisch Center is having the opportunity to bring my real world industry expertise into the classroom.

HTGSS:  What courses do you teach?
JO:  I teach the Legal Issues course in Hospitality in the Graduate Program, as well as the Hospitality, Tourism and Travel Law course in the Undergraduate Program. I feel that both of these courses have wide application to all hospitality and tourism students. Legal considerations and issues are always important elements within these industries.

I strive to utilize my expertise in a manner that presents my students with a practical and intellectual understanding of how the subject matter detailed in these courses applies to their desired fields within the hospitality and tourism industries.

HTGSS:  How can students best utilize the Tisch Center with respects to achieving their industry goals?
JO:  I believe the greatest advantages of attending the Tisch Center are the vast educational resources that exist within NYU on a university level, as well as the professional opportunities created by the abundance of hospitality, travel, tourism and sports activities in New York City. In order for students to maximize these advantages, it is imperative to create key relationships with their professors, industry leaders and each other.
